With line and load in the VZM31 box, original 14/3 black on remote 3-way common and spliced to fixture load, and original red/white as the two travelers: do red/white land on VZM31 Load + Traveler while black/common remains spliced to fixture load?
Before installing the VZM31, the circuit worked as a standard mechanical 3-way.
Box 1 — where I want the VZM31:
• Contains Line, Load and Neutral
• Incoming 14/2 black = Line and was connected to the COMMON of the original 3-way
• 14/3 red and white were connected to the two TRAVELER screws
• 14/3 black was spliced directly to the black conductor going to the light fixture
• Incoming 14/2 white and fixture 14/2 white are the neutral bundle
Box 2 — existing dumb 3-way:
• 14/3 black = COMMON
• 14/3 red + white = two TRAVELER terminals
I already blew one switch, so trying to confirm the VZM31 terminal mapping for this exact before topology, retaining the dumb 3-way?
Specifically, should the original red/white travelers connect to VZM31 Load + Traveler, while the 14/3 black common conductor remains spliced to the fixture load?
After following the instructions from @andrewk (if different from what you’re already doing), the final thing you would need to do is change the switch settings from “Single Pole” to “3-way Dumb Switch”.
This can either be done in your home automation software or on the switch itself. In Home Assistant in Z2M, you would do this by changing the Switch Type parameter (#22) to “3-way Dumb Switch”. You can also do this on the switch itself using Quick Tap sequences…
Multi-Way (3-Way) + Dumb (Existing) Switch Mode
To have your Blue Series Dimmer Switch work with your existing, “dumb” switch in a multi-way (3-Way) setting, hold down on the bottom part of the paddle (off) while simultaneously tapping the configuration button five (5) times (do not let go of the paddle when finished tapping the config button). Wait for the LED Bar to flash solid pink (and then let go of the paddle) indicating the switch has enabled 3-Way + Dumb Switch Mode.
