Wiring questions come up sometimes that aren’t necessarily covered in the supplied documentation, so I have a question about a specific use case… Hopefully with a response from someone directly knowledgeable from the company, or a link to a similar answer that I may not have found that already exists…
With an Aux switch, you can wire it up to a Traveler and Neutral or a Traveler and Line, depending on what your switch circuit has available. The documentation always shows the Neutral being used for the Aux switch when the Dimmer is also connected to the Neutral, and vice versa when there is no Neutral.
My question is this:
Can the wiring methods be mixed using Traveler and Neutral on a Dimmer that doesn’t have a Neutral wire connected, as well as the reverse of using a Traveler and Line on a Dimmer that does have a Neutral?
Sometimes there is a situation where the Line and Load are split, and there are only two wires going between the switch locations (instead of three) with a Neutral at one of the locations and not the other (could be either for this hypothetical). One of these situations came up in a recent discussion on this forum where the person is located in Chicago, having all the wiring run in conduit, causing the standard “romex” wiring methods to not be applicable.
Without confirmation, I am going to assume that this should not be done. This isn’t something that I am looking to do or even suggest to others without finding out, but this is why I am asking… in case it is actually totally fine. I don’t need to know why it will or won’t work, just curious to how much flexibility there is.
