I am setting up a Black Series switch. It’s hooked up to smart bulbs, so I put it in smart bulb mode and turned on the device in Home Assistant, so there is constant power running to the smart bulbs.
I am trying to setup automations to turn on/off the smart bulbs. If I setup the automation to trigger on "Inovelli Black Switch 1 turned on (or off), so the automation never fires.
I am on firmware 1.57 on this switch. I have accomplished this successfully on another switch running firmware 1.52. It just doesn’t seem to send the trigger when the button is pressed.
You’ll have to go back to 1.52. The Black Series was never meant to be a scene controller, but Inovelli added that with 1.52. It was removed after that to make way for other features, as it wasn’t an intended feature for the Black Series.
I still had my copy of Z-Wave PC Controller 5.39 on my NAS from years ago, and it detected my new Zooz 800 Z-wave USB and I successfully paired the device (Black Switch). However, whenever I click the device in Z-wave PC Controller and click the “Get” button, none of the fields populate and I can’t choose a firmware file to upload.
I wish I could find my old Z-wave stick I used to use for doing this when originally configuring the switches. It was a $12 cheapo, but worked every time with v5.39 of ZWPCC. I lost it, though, and this time I couldn’t find a cheap option again like that on Amazon. I bought the $40 Zooz 800 stick, mainly because I want to eventually move it to my Home Assistant instance for long-range Z-wave.
Anyone have any recommendations on Z-wave sticks that works properly with ZWPCC?
Or if there are any other ways to update the firmware, I’m listening. Home Assistant seems to only let you upgrade to the latest version of the firmware - i.e. I can’t pick the 1.52 firmware file from a dialog or anything.
I recommend using Z-Wave JS UI instead of Z-Wave JS with Home Assistant instead. The separate UI will let you select which firmware file you want to upload.
Thanks! I will give it a shot. I used to use it before it expanded out with its own UI in the HA menu. When I totally redid my Home Assistant instance, I only have a handful of Z-wave devices, so migrating over shouldn’t be too much of a pain. I am about 85% ZigBee, 10% WiFi/IP (TP Link switches/Dimmers), and 5% Z-wave for lights/switches. The standard Z-wave integration seemed to handle all my devices well (including the Black Series Dimmers), so I didn’t even take the time to explore the new version of Z-wave JS. I guess I need to learn the new interface.
Update: I was able to pair the switch with Z-Wave JS and downgrade the firmware to the version I needed. However, I couldn’t figure out how to use it as a trigger for an automation, so I ended up excluding, and then including the plain old Z-wave in Home Assistant and got the automations working! So I’m all back up and running now.
You guys are awesome. Thanks so much for the for the help and advice!
