Add thread/matter to this and increase the price and I’m all in for option 2 preorder. Been following this project for a bit but really am hoping for a Thread inclusion.
Thanks Eric, appreciate the amount of detail. I see no point at all in having a sensor with the problems you enumerated, and I’m glad that there is an option #2 that could resolve them. Presence is one of those inputs to a smart house that needs to be almost perfect or it becomes a hassle instead of a luxury.
My 2¢ - as long as the 60Ghz sensor doesn’t sacrifice range too badly for the increased precision (which does concern me a little based on the sensors I’ve played with), don’t release the lower quality one at all even with firmware tweaks. A spectacular new product won’t be recognized as such if it’s released as an incremental update to a bad one.
I would rather have a good product (worthy of the name, “Inovelli”), and a product that I’m happy to recommend to others (like I’m smarter than them) than to have some half-working, “wait 'till you see it dude” failing demonstration, embarrassing, excuse for a smart switch (smart home product).
I’m a little tipsy. Safe to say, despite a large renovation and hoping so much it would be ready… I’d rather wait a year for a good product than “complain” now.
Thanks for making good products.
MG.
Given the sensitivity of these sensors, are they somewhat frequency agile so they don’t interfere with nearby switches if we have multiple? Are they pseudo random or channelized? Are you sure it’s the left/right zone and not side/back lobe detection behind the switch/wall?
I support option #2. Take your time to have a great product. Thanks for the update
Is it possible that the “new product” with better sensor might allow for a Thread/White version? One can dream
I’m interested in option 2, but only if it’s Matter over Thread (i.e. White series).
Option 2 for sure (since houses usually have rooms next to each other), everyone will forget how long they waited but will always remember if it’s not good.
I believe Gabe Newell’s quote is…
“Late is just for a little while. Suck is forever”
Nope,
I definitely will remember how long it takes… I’m definitely the outlier here - There a couple of rules / thoughts to keep in mind.
- Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good
- Remember the 80/20 rule
- A successful product isn’t necessarily successful because it’s technically great, but rather because it’s timely
" Companies also lose financially when they don’t meet their time-to-market targets. In a classic study, McKinsey & Co. found that a product six months late to market earns 33% less profit over five years; if it is released on time but is 50% over budget, that cuts profits by only about 4%."
Thanks for the update. Was the problem in your office caused by motion detected through windows or by motion detected through solid walls? If it’s solid walls, is option #2 addressing this only with left/right zones? Or would there be some way to actually confine the sensor to detection within the walls of a room, without having to limit left/right detection? If it’s just windows that’s less of a problem but if it’s going through walls then that seems like a big challenge with mmWave setups.
Hey Eric, I was actually just about to send in a ticket to cancel my order after thinking about it for many days, the beta unit definitely has problems, i get a lot of ghost detections and just seem to be not reliable enough to do anything useful, I’m glad to chose to come to the forum to check if there was an update, this new sensor sounds promising, would love to hear more about its capabilities when you get the unit from the manufacturer, breathing detection sounds neat, would this new sensor possibly have the capability to ignore objects based on size? (ie. pets)
I have used the Aqara FP2 and it was terrible, ghost detections all the time, and then I tried the Screek Human Presence sensor and it has been the best one i have seen, you can set up zones based on a coordinate system instead of just left and right so you can mask out the room exactly like it is, would the new sensor have similar capabilities? Thank you for all that you guys do and I will definitely continue to support you guys one way or another
Great update. Have you considered also the possibility of similar accidental activations due to folks on floor above/below. Or are the vertical sections of the cone already accounted for? Seems like that might also be a concern in multi-story homes, apartments, or even a duplex/row-house situation.
Hey Eric,I think option #2 is the best course of action. I did have to cancel my mmwave pre-order but only because I needed a dimmer switch sooner rather than later. Create a good switch and i’ll buy plenty for the house
I’ve been lurking here awhile, and I wanted to jump in and say I’d rather wait for a better project. We’re building a new house (closing in March 2025), and I was hoping to have all the smart switches in time for the builder to install them for me, but I’d rather move into the house with dumb switches and then install the new presence switches on my own then have a mediocre product.
Someone else said (and I’ll mirror) that presence is one of those things that if it doesn’t work 99% right, it’s nothing but a hassle. I have a combination of threshold sensors and Aqara FP2 mmWave sensors in my current apartment, and I am forever tweaking or restarting both of them to get presence right - so much so that it’s really not fun anymore.
