I got started in the mid 80’s with X10 and have been using smart home control tech ever since with home grown Internet control in the 90’s. All the X10 is long gone and now migrating away from Insteon as well. I wrote my current system in Java, Python, and Prolog using MQTT and deployed in Kubernetes, more recently integrating Home Assistant. I’ve got a bunch of ESP8266/32 sensors and displays running firmware I wrote in the Arduino environment. Now incorporating Zigbee devices into the mix.
