Assistance with wiring White Series Dimmer in a 3 way configuration to replace old Lutron dimmers

I’m relatively new to implementing smart home equipment. I’m not an electrician but handy around the house and wanted to try to replace an old dimmer being used in a 3 way configuration for recessed lighting.

So far, I replaced an existing Lutron Maestro MA-600 dimmer with a white series dimmer. The Lutron MA-600 dimmer had 4 wires connected to include a black wire connected to a black screw, a red wire connected to a brass screw, a black wire connected to a blue screw, and a green wire connected to ground. I disconnected these wires, removed the MA-600, and connected 5 wires to the Inovelli switch to include a black line wire, a red load wire, a black traveler wire, a white neutral wire (using the jumper that came with the switch) and a bare copper ground wire. The new switch powered up and I connected it to my Home app.

I bought an Inovelli aux switch to replace the old Lutron companion dimmer at the second location. The companion dimmer is connected with 4 wires to include a red wire connected to a black screw, a black wire connected to a brass screw, a black wire connected to a blue screw, and a green wire connected to ground. I noticed the red wire is connected to the black screw whereas the red wire was connected to the brass screw on the MA-600. Also, the black wire is connected to the brass screw whereas the black wire was connected to the black screw on the MA-600.

The Inovelli aux switch has only 3 wire connections to include traveler, neutral, and ground. I’m unsure how to transition the wire connections from the old Lutron companion dimmer to the new Inovelli aux switch.

You’re going to have to identify your wiring configuration, such as line and load in the same box, line and load in different boxes, etc. Trying to back into this using the wiring from another product isn’t the way to approach this. Take a look at the Inovelli wiring diagrams.

If you’re having problems, describe what you have in each box. If you have Romex, then describe 2-wire, 3-wire etc in each box. From your description, it sounds as if you have a line and load in separate boxes, but you’ll have to confirm that for yourself.

Thanks for the reply. I’m having difficulty identifying my situation with the different Inovelli wiring diagrams. I’ve attached a few pictures to illustrate. At one location, I have a 3-wire Romex cable (circled red) connecting to the Inovelli dimmer switch (red wire to load, black wire to traveler, white wire to neutral). In the same box, there is a 2-wire Romex cable for power and other cables for two switches (one for a fan and the other for another row of recessed lights).

In the second location box, I have a 3-wire Romex cable connecting to the current dimmer switch and a 2-wire Romex.

Ok, that looks like a line and load in separate boxes.

I’m pretty sure that the load box is the single gang, but you should test to make sure. Remove the black hot lead presently connected to the Inovelli in the multi-gang box. In the single-gang box, disconnect the black from the 2-wire Romex and test to see if it’s hot. It shouldn’t be.

If that is the case, then the line box is the multi-gang box where you’ve properly put the Inovelli. It looks like you’re feeding the hot from the red capped bundle. Reconnect the hot to the Inovelli.

Connect the red from the 3-wire to the Inovelli traveler terminal and the black to the load terminal. I think you have them reversed.

In the single-gang box, remove the old switch and add the Aux. From the 3-wire, red to traveler, white to Aux. The two blacks from the 2-wire and 3-wire should be wire nutted together.

That worked!! Thanks Bryan.
