Audible motor hum with Inovelli VZM36 Zigbee Canopy module

Experiencing audible motor hum with VZM36 installed.

The motor hum has a periodicity consistent with the speed set for the fan on the VZM36 module.

The noise is not present with the original control module in use.

Any ideas on how to fix the setup to operate without the hum would be appreciated. I don’t know if it needs a special capacitor and inductor combo to cure it or why it this problem is occurring on this fan.

The fan is an AC powered Hamton Bay brand Altura model 68-ATR.

Manual can be found at this website :

Is there a wall switch for the fan? If so, is it a dumb switch, an Inovelli or some type of speed controller?

Did you remove the existing receiver module before installing the VZM36?

I have the VZM31-SN blue series zigbee switch with the fan connected on the load terminal of the switch.

Parameters are set up per the fan module setup guide for a smart switch.

Preferences :

  1. Switch mode = on/off
  2. Switch type = single pole
  3. Smart bulb mode = enabled

Tested with original wireless fan controller installed and a manual switch controller, no change in the sound.

Your switch is wired incorrectly.

When you feed power to a canopy module via the switch box, the hot must be connected to the LINE terminal.

The VZM31 is a dimmer, and the way you wired it you are running a fan (motor) load through the a switch that doesn’t support that load. I’m guessing that is what is causing the humming. Putting the switch in the SBM only ensures the switch remains on a full output, but it’s still a dimmer output.

Here are the Inovelli wiring diagrams:

Ok cool, noise is gone. Definitely overlooked that detail of the schematics. Somewhere I got confused and thought the canopy module needed to be connected to the load of the smart switch for the switch to operate properly as the controller for the fan speed, its makes sense that the dimmer circuitry shouldn’t be used to power the module though.

Thanks for looking over my issue with me.

I still need to get the switch to bind with the fan module.

In the text here the explanation makes it seem like the fan canopy module should be connected to the load of the smart switch with the switch preferences set to smart bulb/fan mode, but later on in the note it shows the correct wiring. Seems like smart bulb/fan mode doesn’t provide power as explained and the dimmer circuit should be only used for lighting.

Yep, I can see how that would be confusing. Theoretically, it would acceptable with a fan switch and a fan without a light, but there is little to gain. (It allow you to cut power to the canopy without throwing the breaker.)

@Kaleb_Inovelli This is from Blue Series Fan/Light Canopy Module • Wiring Schematics | Inovelli Help Center . You might want to look at removing “If using an Inovelli smart switch, you can use Smart Bulb/Fan mode (to lock full power to the fan canopy) and then use digital signals from the switch to the canopy to turn on the fan and lights”, as that conflicts with the installation diagrams.

I agree with you, the cutout switch was one of the main benefits of using the load terminal on the dimmer switch.

However Connecting the fan canopy module through the dimmer module via the load terminal introduces noise into the fan module circuit which is herd audibly. As you mentioned its not designed to handle the inductive load.

Based on my experience I would assume there is no situation where the fan canopy module should be powered via the load terminal because there is not a true dimmer bypass circuit to “lock”(enable) for an inductive load.

I also will be replacing this setup (VZM31-SN, VZM36) with the dedicated fan switch VZM35-SN to achieve the simple operation i was intending. only have one fan id like to control with one switch. I don’t really want to control the fan with the EP3 button and have a useless paddle switch. Room has smart lights controlled with another switch. Bummer, dimmer switches are becoming unnecessary for me to use because nearly all my bulbs now are smart zigbee.

I recoded a short video/audio of the results of it running through the dimmer. if there is a way to share it, my user account is too new to post a video it seems.
Let me know if this is something anyone is interested in viewing and how to share.

Thanks for your support and expertise.

Hi Bry,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have gone ahead and removed that line from the documentation!
