I have a VZM31-SN whose load is part of a Zigbee group with another right next to it. It’s redundant to have two switches in the same gang box which control the same group of lights, so I’d like to bind its EP2 to another group it’s not a part of. Unfortunately, this doesn’t quite work as expected, because the EP2 switch still controls the state of the local EP1 relay.
Activating smart bulb mode doesn’t do what I want, though it’s similar; the problem is that it forces the relay on and I need it to still be able to be controlled. I don’t want to add a smart bulb either, both because it’s one of those “lifetime” LED fixtures without a bulb and on principle.
Activating local protection mode doesn’t do what I want either; firstly because while the physical buttons do still emit events I can build Home Assistant automations off of, it’s decidedly non-trivial to emulate the full functionality of a dimmer switch that way, and secondly because I’ve got an automation which needs to be able to turn on local protection mode temporarily to repurpose the switch buttons.
What I think I need is a new option to detach the automatic internal “binding” from EP2 (the switch) to EP1 (the relay). This would also allow me to “swap” two switches in the same gang box whose order makes no sense without rewiring, in a controller-less, sell-it-with-the-house-to-a-tech-illiterate manner, which I’d really like to be able to do.
(If there’s something I’ve missed and this is possible already, please let me know!)
Edit: I initially specified the wrong model number – VZM36 instead of VZM31-SN – for the device I’m talking about. (Whoops.)
