Confusion about 3-way wiring diagram

I am not 100% sure what my set up is but I tried one method and it did not work so trying to diagnose. Can someone please help clarify, from the white series page, there are 4 schematics under the “3-Way Neutral Wire Installation” arrow White Series Dimmer (2-1) Switch • Wiring Schematics | Inovelli Help Center

The 2nd and 3rd one are the same starting point, is that right? Is it just saying you can choose which box you want to put the auxilary vs the smart switch?

Also a minor question, I know via the config/5 presses or software toggle it needs to be configured to work. Does that mean that the smart switch won’t work without that set up properly, or only the aux switch won’t work without that set properly? I am trying to diagnose what the issue may be, although I think it is set properly in Home Assistant (shows OnOff+Aux)

Yes. They are both line and load in different boxes.

I’m pretty sure that the Inovelli should work properly regardless of the setting. However, if you are trying to troubleshoot, set it as a 2-way and make sure that the Inovelli alone is working properly.

In case helpful to anyone, once I understood a bit more about how 3-ways work I was able to diagnose it easily. If you connect the line/load in one switch box, then the smart switch in the other switch box will control the lights normally. I recommend doing this as a first step and testing before installing the aux, which just controls the smart switch.

Note that in the diagram, “common” refers to the wire that goes directly to either the breaker box or the fixture.
