Using: White 2-1 Switches and Inovelli’s Aux switches.
I’ve installed several of these through the house (both 3-way and single situations) and this is the first time I’ve run into this issue. I left the dumb switch installed at the secondary switch and installed the White 2-1 at the “main” part of the 3-way (where the 120v is coming into the box). After installing the main switch, everything worked fine. I paired it with Home Assistant and it turned the lights on and off as expected. I then went to install the Aux switch at the secondary part of the 3-way and when I finished, neither turned on any lights. The Aux switch does turn the main switch on and off, but no lights. The main switch will turn on and off (LED bright / dim and relay sound), but no lights turn on anymore.
I did set the main switch to Multi + Aux both manually at the switch (confirmed white LED) and in Home Assistant.
Has anyone experienced this?
Picture of the Aux box below. Note that currently, I have the red and black switched just because I was doing some troubleshooting but before I did have the red connected instead of the black and I’ve confirmed red is the “hot” wire (constantly hot regardless of the state of the main switch).
So in a neutral configuration, the Aux switch needs a neutral to the neutral terminal and the traveler terminal on both the dimmer and the Aux connected together.
The load terminal on the dimmer should be connected to the load, not the Aux switch.
When you set these up, you really have to understand the wiring topology first. You plugged a hot conductor into the traveler terminal. Hopefully that didn’t damage it.
The fact that the red in the Aux box is constantly hot suggests to me that you don’t have the wiring topology figured out correctly, presuming that is truly is hot constantly irregardless of the position of the switch in the other box.
In the Inovelli 2-1 box, how many Romex and what type are at least in part connected to the switch? i.e. Only one 3-wire, a 2-wire and a 3-wire, etc.
To be clear, the red in the Aux box is only constantly hot when the 2-1 is hooked up. If I disconnect the 2-1 and turn the breaker back on, nothing in the Aux box is hot. Maybe that was already understood, just wanted to make sure.
In the 2-1 box:
There is a black and red wire coming from one Romex (3-wire I believe) that is going to the traveler (red) and load (black) on the 2-1.
There is a white going to the 2-1 neutral that is bundled with all other whites in the box.
Then there is a black hot wire coming from another Romex (2-wire I believe) that is going to Line on the 2-1 (also going to Line on the other 2-1 that is in the box.
It’s pretty crowded, but here are a couple pictures. Note that, again, I happen to have the black and red swapped on the switch on the right because I’m troubleshooting, but I had the red going to traveler and black going to load.
Thanks for the pics, but I can’t really do anything with those as I can’t see in the box well enough.
So we’ll go with your description. In the 2-1 box, you have a 2-wire which is the constant hot and the neutral, and a 3-wire. In the Aux box, you have a single 3-wire. If that is the case, then the wiring diagram you posted should be correct.
You’ll notice in that wiring diagram that re-wiring at the light box is required. Did you do that? If you did, then you will know which is the neutral and which is the traveler going to the Aux box, allowing you to wire properly.
If you didn’t re-wire, then you will need to, as the load conductor needs to be connected to the light, not passed to the Aux box.
