In multiway with AUX switches, can the main smart switch be in any location?

I’ve gone through the wiring diagrams, but they mostly only go up to 4way and have the smart switch in the location closest to the line.

Based on my understanding, i see no reason you can’t move the smart switch to any of the locations as long as it is getting 120v, neutral, and connectivity to the travelers, but this isn’t exactly called out (although the guides state 1) it must get 120v, and 2) it can’t have only travel lines).

Here is the original:

Here’s my master MS Paint edit (no I’m not accepting job offers), moving the smart switch to the middle, for example.

Man that sucks to edit in Paint. Anyway the reds could be wire-nut tied or combined at the Inovelli switch, and the switch even on the far right too, if i’m understanding this correctly.

It’s the case where the only wire is a traveler/3wire it won’t work (unless the box also gets power on the same circuit). Some of my switch boxes have power in both locations on the same circuit.

Second question, can you mix add-on switches with multiple smart switches in the traveler-only scenario?
See below:

Yes, that is correct, so long as you are mating w/Aux switches AND you can get the load to the light.

The short answer would be no, if you are referring to solely communicating via a wired connection. I’m not sure how binding/associating shakes out with an Aux in the mix. The binding/association geniuses here would have to address that.

It works fine at least with Z-Wave associations. Just attach each Aux to a single Red 2-1. I ran that way with 3 auxes connected to 1 red and then 1 Aux connected to another red for a while before replacing them all with blues (and no auxes).

this is good to know. I’m assuming in my diagram that you wouldn’t want to connect the AUX to both Smart Switches, I’m not sure how that would behave.

Correct. Each aux switch should connect to only a single Smart switch.
