Thread / Matter Fan Canopy Module | Project Cheryl

I noticed that there are a couple of Beta OTA software builds for this device in the Matter OTA DCL:

Sadly it’s here only and not on the CSA certification list yet.

Is there anything interesting to report on the progress front? I assume that the less-than-stellar rollout of Matter 1.2 w/ Fan support isn’t helping. And matter bindings are another beast entirely. I (like many) am anxiously waiting for this device.

Do these have the capability to reverse polarity internally to change the fan direction? I’d imagine probably not due to a shared neutral internally between the light and fan, but figured I’d ask anyway if it has the internal ability to reverse polarity that just isn’t enabled.

Maybe an idea for v2 instead if nothing else.

Reversing polarity is a DC thing, and these fan modules only support AC motors unless something has changed recently. There is no support to reverse rotation on any Inovelli fan controller AFAIK, because it would require someone to re-wire their fan internally to use the fan’s reversing function…

Yeah. Even ac fans reverse polarity, you just have to flip the switch manually. Figured incorporating a double pole double throw relay internally would be the solution to it

That would require an end user to re-wire their fan, which I doubt that the UL would be happy about for both the canopy module and fan’s approval statuses…

No more than doing a rewiring of a switch really, you would need a dedicated neutral as well for the fan so the canopy can reverse polarity internally. It would be doing everything a regular fan does manually (switch speeds and direction) all by varying resistance and switching a relay. All the original items can stay in place.

This is an automated post letting you know the status has changed for this project. We’ve moved to Phase 7 (of 8), which is Shipping to Inovelli HQ.

The Shipping to HQ phase is the final stretch! Products are loaded onto a sea container and shipped to a West Coast port. After clearing U.S. Customs, they’re transported by semi-truck to Michigan. This phase typically takes 4–6 weeks.

Estimated Completion Date: Mid February 2025

You should have also received an email notifying you of the status change. If you haven’t please take a moment to update your preferences here: Hub & Communication Preferences – Inovelli and select, “Fan/Canopy Module” under the “White Series (Matter)” column. While you’re at it, make sure to update your hub/automation platform!
