Important information and possible steps required for non-neutral users after upgrading to firmware 3.04
We are releasing a new firmware update (3.04) for the VZM31-SN (within the next week) that includes an improved dimming algorithm designed to resolve the flickering issues some users were experiencing. For most setups, this update should provide a noticeably smoother and more stable dimming experience.
However, we want to call out an important advisory for users running the switch in a non-neutral configuration.
What to Expect
After updating, some non-neutral users may notice erratic behavior at higher dimming levels (for example, instability or unexpected behavior near the top of the dimming range). This is a known side effect of the improved dimming algorithm that fixes the flicker issue.
Recommended Solutions
If you encounter this behavior, there are two recommended options:
Lower the Maximum Level
Reducing the Maximum Level setting can stabilize operation and eliminate the issue while still maintaining smooth dimming. Start at the highest level and go down in increments to see at which level the problem is resolved.
Install a Dimmer Bypass
Adding a dimmer bypass can provide additional load stability in non-neutral setups and is a more permanent solution if you want to retain higher maximum output levels.
Why This Happens
Non-neutral installations rely on load characteristics to power the switch. The updated dimming algorithm optimizes performance and flicker reduction, but in certain wiring/load combinations, this can require either a lower maximum output or additional load support via a bypass.
As always, we appreciate the community feedback that helps us continue improving our firmware. If you have questions or need help dialing in your settings, feel free to comment below—we’re happy to help.
oh wow this is amazing! i’ve had frustrating intermittent “flashing” on basically all our GE Reveal bulbs since i put in 10 switches last year, and this really seems to fix it for good. Still some slow fade-ins/fade-outs at lower light levels, but that’s way less obnoxious than those intermittent flashes.
edit: tentatively the slow fading is also reduced - i can set a lower min now. I’m ecstatic!
These fixes are going to make it to the VZM32-SN also i assume? I only have one but its still a flickering mess.
It was released to ZHA earlier today. After a few days to make sure there are no big issues it will be released to Z2M. You can still PM me if you want to manually install it before that.
If you have the first batch of switches, it likely needs a bootloader update via a cable before it can take this update. DM Eric and he can help you figure it out.
