Wiring 2-1 + Fan Canopy

Curious on the status as well. I have a fan that has smart lights in it. The fan has a canopy module. I am looking to get a wall switch for manual controls. Project Walt might do this but I know that will take more time.
I did try to get the 2-1/Dimmer switch to work on here where again I just need to supply power but I’m guessing with the fan, it does have enough output.

Since you’re using a canopy module, the Smart dimmer should work just fine as a scene controller to send instructions to the canopy. Can you explain what you mean by “with the fan, it does have enough output”?

I have a single gang box that supplies power to a fan with lights. That fan has a canopy module installed. I keep the lights of the canopy on (thread bulbs installed) and the fan works.
When I installed the thread dimmer switch into the box, the fan canopy stayed offline. I trued different modes but assumed on/off+single was the best. I also tried smart bulb mode enabled.
Not sure I hit every iteration. From reading about the fan switch or the pure on/off switch, I thought those were needed given a fan requires more load.
Maybe my canopy needs different settings?

Do you have a neutral in your switch box?

Yes I do have a neutral and I also added the grounding wire.

Come to think of it, the first time I installed the switch, I forgot the neutral. The canopy power seemed to work (lights came on) but the switch didn’t keep power.

With your configuration, both the switch and the canopy module should be wired directly. There should not be a load on the switch. Take the incoming hot and neutral in the switch box and wire it to the Line and Neutral on the Inovelli. The outgoing to the fan hot and neutral conductors get connected to the 2nd holes on the Inovelli Line and Neutral. Use a pigtail for the switch’s ground. Bundle the three ground conductors together and cap with a wire nut.

This way, the switch will be fully powered, as will the canopy module. The switch has no load i.e. no conductors connected to the Load or Traveler terminals. It’s now simply a scene controller. You can use switch taps to control the fan light and motor via automations.

@Bry thank you! I’ll give this a try tomorrow (got baby duty the rest of the night). Might dry up a sketch to make sure I understand it.
I know there are better options coming, but bringing physical controls to the nursery will help the grandparents and my wife!

The only part I don’t follow is the neutral wires. My neutral wires are all in a bundle right now (they weren’t used by the hunter fan wall module). I don’t see an incoming neutral bundle and an outgoing neutral bundle. Here is how I think it will go (and we are about to find out).
Incoming line/hot goes into Inovelli switch line. Outgoing (to fan) line is connected to Inovelli switch line (making it hot). Invoelli switch neutral connected to neutral bundle. Ground is done with pigtail instead of ground hole (what does that change?) to the Inovelli switch ground.

Edit: The above scenario did not work. I cannot communicate with the canopy module thus neither the fan nor the lights turn on.

This should be fine. All of the neutrals on the circuit should be bundled together. Connecting in the incoming to one of the neutral holes on the Inovelli switch and the outgoing to the other one will achieve the same thing.

I only have one cable (the one that came with the switch) going from the switch neutral to the neutral bundle in the wall. Is that sufficient?

Yes, because the incoming neutral (from the breaker panel) and the outgoing neutral (to the fan) are in that bundle already. So you’re adding the switch to it with the cable that came with it.

Darn, then that does not help with getting power to the canopy and using the dimmer switch as a scene controller.
Also I do not know how to split this troubleshooting off into another topic. But feel free to do that as I know this is stretching along.

I think we’re going to need to see pictures of all of the wiring in the fan box + the switch box (pull the switches out of the box completely so that all of the wires are visible) to try to help troubleshoot further.

That works. I will work on pictures and diagrams. Maybe after my baby goes to sleep tonight!

Great news! It was not the switch. The canopy had lost connection to HomeAssistant. After resetting the canopy, power is flowing to the fan! The lights and fan are operational. @Bry your wiring did work. I have attached a diagram of the wiring. Now off to program the switch entirely as a scene controller!

Looks good. The only comment I would make is wirenut/wago the line connection in the wall box vs using the second hole on the switch.

Personally, I would disagree, especially with older houses and smaller wall boxes, it’s easier to make box fill by using the second hole on the terminal rather than a wire nut or wago and introducing a new wire.
