Zigbee Motion Switch | Project Linus (Blue Series)

I don’t work for Inovelli, so I can’t comment on future projects that I don’t know of. But from what I’ve seen, all in flight projects are coming from “V”.

What is the max extent in x, y, and z? Even if it is a rough estimate, that would be great so I know how many I can and should order for my setup?

From what I can tell skimming the developer documentation, this is technically possible. It partially depends on how Inovelli exposes its custom functionality as matter clusters, and I’m still not completely clear on what the story is for manufacturer-specific custom clusters in Matter, but it seems like this would probably work.

Also I found an existing iOS app that seems to allow you to send matter commands to a connected device. Obviously not at all user-friendly, but it’s a demonstration of what’s possible using the apple SDKs. I didn’t look for an Android equivalent, but I imagine it would probably exist.

My expectation is that the various Matter controller “ecosystems” (Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and even to some extent Home Assistant) will build support for the core Matter clusters into their native apps, but that if a device manufacturer needs custom functionality, like a manufacturer-specific cluster, or a UI that sends and receives data over Matter and uses it to set detection parameters visually, then it’s on the manufacturer (or their community) to build it.

I wonder if someone in the Inovelli community would be interested in writing an open-source app for this purpose. It seems completely implausible for any company but Inovelli, but Inovelli just might be able to pull it off. I don’t have any experience writing mobile apps, but if some effort like this gets off the ground, I might be interested in helping with some of the backend/Matter layer.

Will the location sensing events (motion/presence) be sent over zigbee so they can be used as part of automations independently from local load or dimming control?

For example, I want to trigger automations based on the readings from a particular switch but not impact the current state of the light connected to that switch.

Yes, that’s the plan.

For what it’s worth. Zooz switches don’t fit standard mud rings either. Hell even the Leviton Decora Edge dumb switch won’t fit a mud ring I just tried in a 2-gang setup. You’re trying to make something fit a box in a corner case when just even about no other smart switch would fit either.

Instead of re-engineering the switch as a whole, and holding up the release date, it would have been better to look for alternatives for the mud rings themselves in the small percentage of people who had that usecase. Truly square mud rings exist:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Carlon-2-Gang-1-2-in-PVC-ENT-Box-Mud-Ring-A420RR/100404090

Chasing down every corner case like this, is just going to pile on the delays from releasing it on time.

Will this switch require a separate software package to configure? How would this work with Zigbee/Zwave devices?

Don’t really agree with this statement. There is waaaay more upside for them to making it compatible with rounded mud rings than not. There is no small percentage of houses that have rounded corner metal mud rings. New or old houses. While square mud rings do exist, it doesn’t solve the fact that people may already have metal rounded mud rings in their home already. You can’t expect them to rip that out and replace the entire box just for a switch. New builders will go with whatever is cheaper, which is how we ended up with rounded corners in the first place, just stamped metal

My previous house had metal mud rings and I had to square off the corners and even the middle screw tabs if I wanted to fit in 2 or more switches in one box.

When will the beta units go out for the Indigogo supporters?

If we wanted to place an order for the Matter version of the motion switches, how could we go about this? Pre-order the Blue version or back the Indiegogo and ask it to be converted to Matter version as others have done above?

Do you mean a thread version? Matter is a standard not a radio

The issue is probably the labeling of the post. Matter/zigbee

Matter over zigbee doesn’t actually exist as far as I’m aware. Matter is currently only offered over WiFi and thread.
Inovelli is hoping for the ability to flash between zigbee and matter/thread via OTA update or a direct connected flash.
Still unconfirmed whether that’s a possibility with the MG24 chip.

So the matter/thread switch is actually not available yet. This is Zigbee only for the time being until more information is released.

I’m definitely on the matter/thread bandwagon myself so I’m also hoping for it but as of right now it’s not happening yet.

Looking at the timeline you put out back in October we should be in the final firmware test phase but looking at the site you are still on the tooling phase. Can we get an updated timeline?

Hey great question – here’s an update:

We just received the beta samples yesterday, so we still need to test them. I have us finishing that around early/mid-March. The good news with Zigbee/Z-Wave is that we can submit everything for certifications earlier than we can with Matter, so we don’t have to wait until the final firmware to do so. The caveat is that we can’t add anything new once we submit it, so I like to go through a couple rounds of firmware testing first so we can add things as we’re testing.

I’ll release a new timeline shortly, but I’ve also had one up on our website that I’ve been trying my best to keep up-to-date. I have some automations that will change the website, update Discourse (this forum) and send out a mass-email any time there’s any sort of date change (except for the emails, those will only go out if there is a Phase change – e.g., Tooling to Beta Testing, Beta Testing to Certifications, etc). Today/tomorrow will be the first I’m I’m deploying this to Discourse and email, so I apologize in advance if things are messed up the first couple times.

Here is a video of me testing out the Zigbee Bindings with the switch last night. I apologize for the kids in the background.

Here is my setup:

  • Samsung SmartThings
  • Switch is a remote only (e.g., not connected to a load – it used to be a switched outlet that I just put the line/neutral into and made the outlet always hot and the switch is just a remote)
  • The three bulbs in the distance are Hue bulbs that are connected directly to SmartThings (not the Hue bridge)
  • I have the three bulbs group bound to the Zigbee mmWave switch

It’s hard to tell from the video, but I’m about 2-3’ behind the switch when I walk out of the room and then maybe a foot in front of it (to the right) when I walk in. It looks like I’m halfway in the room, but I’m about an arms-length away from it.

When I leave, there’s about a 15-20 second delay, which can be adjusted. When I enter, there is a 1 second delay, which can be adjusted.

More testing to come, but so far, so good. I haven’t played with the zones or anything yet as @EricM_Inovelli hasn’t received his switch yet, so he hasn’t been able to write the full Edge Driver.

Here are some pics:

Blue Series is on the left, Red Series is on the right.

Wanted to add some additional housekeeping notes that I shared in the Z-Wave thread:

In regards to the timeline and communication, here’s what I’ve implemented that I will be testing over the course of the next couple months to ensure this is up-to-date and you all have the latest information:

Website: On the product page, there is a Phase chart that will show you exactly where we’re at, what the Phase is all about, and gives an estimated timeline.

Forum: Whenever a date is changed, there will be an auto-post that will show up that gives the date change for both the Phase we’re in as well as the overall delivery date. If it’s a large change, I will also post additional context separately. It will look like this:

Email: Whenever a Phase change has happened (e.g., Tooling to Beta Testing, Beta Testing to Certifications, etc), you will receive a mass email if you’ve subscribed (and double-opted-in) to our product notifications. If you haven’t already, feel free to sign up here (on each product page - or on any page on our site at the very bottom):

I know I’ve always struggled with updating things in various places and this has been a blind spot for me, so I spent the entire month of December and January working on ways to improve and make things more automated.

How the above works is that I have a main Google Sheet that has all of our products, the Phase their in, and dates and whenever that sheet is changed, it will automatically send that information out to the above platforms.

As I’m not a coder, there will undoubtedly be some mistakes, so bear with me on it.

I appreciate the update I just received via email. As someone who gave up following the progress closely long ago though, I have one suggestion - anytime you send an update email, it should include the current expected ship date for these, along with a confidence level that you’ll realistically hit that date.

I’ve gone back to the original post here, and clicked through the most recent few updates that are linked from the OP, and don’t see a date anywhere. I also saw the new timelines for option 1 and option 2, and read the September update describing Option 2, but don’t see which option you ended up going with. (Again, I’m reading only the original post and the update posts linked from it, not the entire thread.) Since the Option1 timeline is collapsed, should I take that to mean that you’ve moved to Option 2?

Thank you for the update. Wondering about that as well. Is there going to be both options coming out, or now is it only option 2 (or 1) coming? Since we’ve been informed about the left and right zone and how it could fault trigger from side walls, I’ve been looking at the position of the switches in my house, and a few of them probably won’t work with option 1. So I can adjust the number of units I preordered.

Yes, option 2 is currently being tested and that timeline is the correct one.

I recently became aware of this project (would have helped crowdfund it!). I own several 2-1 white switches (use them with Apple Home and Home Assistant) and they’ve been great.

I just wanted to chime in support for Thread/Matter. I don’t have any Zigbee devices and don’t plan to add a Zigbee network, and would rather use Thread than z-wave (tldr more industry funding, IP networking is a better foundation). I wouldn’t mind a OTA process to flash a different firmware (which I acknowledge is not a mass-market solution).

I see on the new phase/timeline display on the store page that this is in beta testing. Do you want someone who knows how to debug zha quirks in home assistant to help make sure all of the cluster map to the correct entities, actions, and events show up in Home Assistant?
