Kind of disappointed with the communication on this. Eric had committed to giving us bi-weekly updates several months back and there’s only been a handful of updates since, the last one being almost two months ago. Even “no update/progress” is better than silence.
Still in beta testing. This one is a lot more complicated than a normal switch.
All, still no news from certification as of yet (Again I am not Eric but this is what we have)
I haven’t seen anything on this thread about fan loads since 2022. Was the fan UL applied for with this switch?
I am not quite sure where Eric was going with the response you quoted, but this is a lighting switch, not a fan switch. It is not rated for fan loads so I would not expect any fan switch certifications for it. Down the road there may be a fan variant, but this isn’t it.
Looking into the spec sheet and trying to determine how effective these will be for different rooms in my house. I’m guessing the detection range is what the company guarantees for detection and that just scaling the chart over the floor plan is a valid method for getting an idea how what areas would be covered.
I wonder if Linus has to wait this long for these switches?
I suspect he might have been part of the beta group…?
Maybe? It’s taken 3 years to get to this point.
With the caveat that I don’t work for Inovelli, but I’ve been beta testing this switch (and several others over the past ~5 years):
- This is the most complicated switch that Inovelli has made to date. There has been a huge amount of hardware research that Inovelli and the the manufacturer has done to figure out exactly how to build this switch and which mmWave module is best for this switch before all of the software customization for both the mmWave module and the switch began.
- There was also some time lost as the switch was moved from the first manufacturer to the current manufacturer when Inovelli wasn’t happy with the quality of the product. Effectively, this development period has had two switches created.
That doesn’t look right. Look for the LD6002 sensor datasheet in the thread.
This video is the first switch attempt. Inovelli started this switch with a new manufacturer who more or less over sold their ability and also over sold how well the sensor they recommended worked. This is partly why it’s taken so long. Inovelli went through the whole development process with this manufacturer and had switches in beta testing and by that time had found the manufacturer was lacking in ability and the beta testing was showing that the sensor was simply not good enough for what the switch is expected to be. So, they had to dump all that work and go to their main manufacturer and start over with them with a better sensor.
The first sensor was similar to a Hi-Link LD2410 if you’re familiar with that one. It was better than a motion sensor but it is 1-dimensional so you can’t do much for excluding areas or excluding moving items like ceiling fans. It also lacked in the ability to detect people who weren’t moving much. The new sensor is Hi-Link LD6002, a 60GHz sensor that can detect heartbeats and has full 3-D mapping capability.
That’s where I got the detection range graphic from.
I say this as a total Inovelli fan boy:
I think this thread (along with it’s Z-Wave counterpart) is the exact reason that the community is clammoring for more consistant and better communication.
With multiple changes in design, sensor selection, timeline delays it’s a lot to keep track of. One sticky post that is updated regularly or a landing page of the current state, along with the current projected timeline, would be super helpful. Most of us get it’s stuck in certification backlog right now, but what does the timeline map out to be once you get the certification? Are the components ready to run through SMT and just be assembled, or are we looking at 12-week lead time for components, then manufacture, then ship?
I think this is one of the most patient and supportive groups of customers out there in this ecosystem, but for some open feedback, jumping back and forth between two threads approaching a thousand posts over 2-years and keeping track, noting that Eric posted 3-weeks ago about having a single zone, having to remember that’s in the Z-Wave thread… etc. etc. You catch my drift.
Lance is trying, Eric and Eric I’m sure are going a million miles an hour on 5 projects while running a business, and others like Peter, Bry and Rohan are trying to help and be supportive, even jumping in and giving project history at post number 734 in this thread, but there are a lot of questions and topics going unanswered as of late.
Just my two cents. This is a great group, super helpful and supportive, but there has to be a better way to get the current state of things communicated along with forward looking views.
Sorry, I see the graphic now. Yes, that’s probably about what you get. The LD6002 is really good at detecting off to the sides so you’d probably get more into the left corner than that shows.
This is a simple problem to rectify. The updates need to be on Indiegogo!! That’s where I spent my money, that’s where the updates were originally and that’s where they belong. You want more technical info or a place to discuss with the community? Sure, do it here, but OFFICIAL communication and updates need to be on the Indiegogo page and not having an update for 2 months is unacceptable! I’m willing to wait for this switch, but the lack of updates are making me wish I didn’t support the project in the first place.
