Any way to reset a LZW-31-SN that wont turn off local protection mode

So i had this switch in local protection mode set by home assistant but the controller bricked during a firmware update so I can no longer turn it off that way. I’ve tried to hit the config button 8 times but it does not seem to want to turn off local protection nothing happens. Ive power cycled it a few times but that does not change the result. I’ve even tried the blue seres down button + 10 times config button with no luck.
If i push the button 3 times it starts flashing blue like it wants to unpair zwave but other than that I can’t seem to get much of a response from the switch. Is there any other key combination that can reset this thing?

To factory reset your Red Series 2-1 switch, hold down on the top of the paddle (on button) along with the configuration (favorites) button for approximately 20 seconds until the LED Bar turns red and then release.

The 8x config press is the proper way to turn off local protection for the LZW31-SN. Ignore the second post here as that is for a newer series switch.

When you pressed config 8x, did you see a flashing red or green? When local control is enabled, the switch will flash green after pressing config 8x.

I would try varying the speed of the presses. As I recall, you have to press them pretty quickly.

You can also try a long press of config, about 40 seconds, to see if that factory resets the switch. I am not near one to test, but it is possible that generation allowed for a factory reset even if local control was disabled.

I have varied the speed of pushes for about 10 minutes of trying lol. Also I have others of the same model. The 8x key push works on them properly. It just won’t on this one. The only thing I can get a response out of the switch with is the 3x key push nothing else seems to do anything.

If the 3X seems to work as if it makes itself available for pairing, try a general exclude with your hub. That should exclude it and factory reset the switch.

If that doesn’t work, the only thing I can think of is to try SiLabs PC Controller software with a Z-Wave dongle. You can exclude it there.

The original stick that it was paired to died during a firmware update. Can I use just any stick to unpair it with the silabs software?

Yes, any stick will work. Any hub capable of doing a general exclusion will work as well.

Let me try that. Will home assistant do a general exclusion?

I think it’s Remove Node in HA, but someone that actually knows should probably respond.

@chack

Which Zwave integration are you using with HA? ZwaveJS built in or the ZwaveJS UI separate one with websockets/mqtt?

It’s zwave JS UI but with the HA zwave integration not mqtt

If you open up Zwave JS UI, look at the bottom right and click the little blue hamburger button > Manage Nodes is the green one that comes up above it > Select Exclusion and hit next (gives you 30s) and click the switch config button 3x to put it in pairing and it should be excluded.

Then you do the same steps but an inclusion to re-pair it.

That switch just hold the config button down until it turns red.

The stick is dead. It’s just stupid to attempt to unpair any LZW or VZW when 20s will reset it to factory defaults so it can be paired again.

Between LZW and VZW devices I’ve reset devices well over 100 times and they’re always ready to pair again once reset.

It won’t reset because local protection is enabled. The key press to disable local protection is not working.

Doing an exclude from the new controller then adding it back worked. Its back to normal again thank you!
