Black series doesn't turn off. Everything else is fine

All of a sudden, one of my black series dimmer switches don’t turn all the way off. The on works, dimming, etc. Both from the switch and the smartthings app. However, when I turn off the switch, it just dims the bulbs a little but clearly keeps it on. I didn’t change the bulbs. I also tried changing the minimum level in the settings higher and lower, and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Please help. Thanks!

Are you doing a quick press down on the paddle to turn it off? Sometimes people hold the paddle down too long and that just dims down to the minimum range and will not turn the switch off.

@Bry, I’ve tried quick, slow, app, etc. I’ve used the switch for years. First time I’m having issues.

What hub are you using? When the bulb(s) are on and the app displays “on”, does the app display “off” after you do a quick press down on the switch’s paddle to turn the lights off? I’m trying to figure out is the switch realizes it was turned off and sends that status to the hub.

Turn the dimmer up to max brightness, then press the down paddle to turn it off. How much do the bulb(s) dim? Do they remain on dimly lit, or do they remain pretty close to the max brightness?

What is the load?

Is this a non-neutral?

If it is a non-neutral, is a bypass installed?

Have you power cycled it, either with the breaker or by pulling the air gap them popping it back in?

I am using the air gap to turn it off so my daughter can sleep!

Yes. The app shows it is off. The LED dims as well indicating that it is off.

They dim maybe 30-50%? It is by no means ‘close to dark’.

What is the load?

3 9W Dimmable LED A19 Lightbulbs

Is this a non-neutral?

I don’t believe so. The settings from when I set it up a while ago says Neutral.

If it is a non-neutral, is a bypass installed?

There definitely is not a bypass

What I was getting at with all of my questions is that sometimes, even in a neutral installation, LED bulbs can remain dimly lit instead of fully shutting off. In that case, sometimes, a bypass solves the issue.

In your case this has been working just fine for some time and just recently started. Sometimes bulb characteristics change. But what makes me think this may not be it is that others that report this says the bulbs remain dim. It doesn’t sound as if they are dim in your case.

A couple options:

  1. Temporarily swap out the bulbs for something other than LED, CFL or incandescent and see if the same behavior occurs.

  2. Factory reset the switch.

It seems that the switch thinks it’s off based on it’s report to ST, so I’m not quite sure what’s going on!

I tried new (LED) bulbs and reset, and it doesn’t seem to work.

Is it possible that the settings are not getting propagated to the device from the app? Would an incorrect Minimum Level Cause this behavior? How would I debug this in Smartthings?

This is me trying to make some changes. CLI logs ‘appear’ OK, but changing the button press delay is still not ‘instantaneous’ like it was before I reset it. Any way to know what the switch itself has for its settings?

I don’t think a setting would cause the bulbs to remain illuminated when the switch is off. The dimmer works fine otherwise, so local control is enabled. Plus, ST is reporting that the switch is off, so the switch believes it is off as well. A quick press down should turn the switch of and not setting that I know of should override that.

When you say you “reset”, that was a factory reset via long press (approx 40 secs) of the config?

Absent a damaged switch, the only thing I am aware of that causes bulbs to remain lit it the LED bulb incompatibility I mentioned earlier. I know you swapped out for new LEDs, but the proper test here is to swap out for an incandescent or CFL. Something that draws more power than a LED. I don’t think this is it because your bulbs are remaining pretty bright but it’s still worth a shot.

So if you’ve done that and factory reset as well, I’m out of suggestions. I suppose you could check the wiring to make sure nothing is loose at the switch, but I honestly can’t imagine a loose connection would cause this.

I just excluded the switch, which the documentation I stumbled upon said it was a reset. I probably read it wrong. I’ll try the 40 seconds. I guess I should exclude the switch first?

The factory reset may very well exclude it. But even if it doesn’t there probably is no reason to do that because you are adding it back to the same hub. But it can’t hurt, I suppose.

Excluding it from the network will reset it to defaults, that’s part of the zwave requirements.

Factory resetting it will exclude it. I almost always do this because it’s easier. But, the hub may then think the device has failed and you have to delete the failed device. I still find this easier than going through the exclude process.

Factory reset didn’t work. I’ll try to look at the wiring over the weekend.

It’s likely not wiring. Try setting it to dumb 3-way switch mode.

Didn’t help.

Do you hear the relay clicking when you turn it on and off, because the relay click would definitely cut power.

I finally had a few minutes to work on this, while I was home when it wasn’t dark outside, and I ended up replacing it with another black series switch. Since the new switch works fine, it seems like the old switch died. Oh well. Thanks all who tried to help.
