Faulty switches? No other cause? I’m in the same boat except mine only works normally with the dumb switch off. The dumb switch always works but the inovelli will only toggle when i press the down paddle when the dumb switch is on. Press down to turn it on or off… don’t get it…
So since the Inovelli only works with the dumb switch in one position, when you switch the dumb switch to the other position, does the Inovelli lose power? i.e. does the LED bar go out? If so, that suggests a wiring issue.
If the Inovelli remains powered with the dumb switch in both positions, then that suggests a signalling issue. Double check to ensure that the switch type is set to 3-way dumb.
It has power in both positions. It just doesn’t function correctly when the dumb switch is off. I have to press the lower paddle to turn it both on and off and pressing up doenst do anything. Though holding up still raises the bbrightness. I have an automation that turns all the lights off and it will turn that one ON, instead, if its already off.
I think im wired like this. Think it would make a difference?
I actually have an aux switch but there are three ceiling lights that are running off the switch 12ft up in the air and I didnt feel like re-wiring them.
Moved to a new topic to prevent hijacking the other one.
If you’re using a dumb switch, this would be the proper wiring.
Are you asking if using an Aux would make a difference?
You didn’t answer about ensuring the switch type was set to 3-way dumb.
Also, remove ALL automations pertaining to the switch, or at least remove the switch from all automations, to ensure some automation isn’t hosing you.
No, I was asking if that wiring configuration might play any part in it. The switch is set to three way dumb switch with a neutral. I have tried resetting it multiple times and setting it to a dumb switch through Z2M as well with the switch itself. The behavior is the same with automations off.
When the dumb switch is off, all is well. With the dumb switch on, the bottom paddle of the smart switch essentially toggles the lights on and off. Upon turning them on to off, it will turn the lights off but the LEDs will quicklt change to the “on” status afterwards but without the actual lights on. At this point the top paddle does nothing but pressing down again will turn the lights back on. The top paddle still works for dimming when the lights are on.
It could, although your issue isn’t what is typically demonstrated with a wiring error.
Have you factory reset the switch? That will ensure that no automations are hindering it.
I’ve factory reset it multiple times and reprogrammed in different ways and even tried it not on the zigbee network.. I’ve read some posts online about it being caused by some types of lights, but I have the exact same lights on another identical switch in a 3 way dumb setup. I guess I’ll just try and install the aux switch when I have some time and see if that can help.
@bran do you have a dimmer bypass that you can add to the load? It may help when using a dumb switch.
Even With the neutral ? I have an old shelly bypass. I’m not confident it would work well, because I believe I would need one at all three lights or need to run some sort of wire between the first and last Light in the series. At that point I might as well rewire them to be more compatible with my aux switch.
I’m just confused as to why I am having this issue with these lights when I have the exact same bulbs on a different switch in my house using the exact same configuration without any issue. Is it possible the switch itself is the problem? I don’t have an extra to test with.
Yes, even with a neutral wire the dumb switch can cause the need. It is hard to say why this would happen in this switch but not in the same setup in another location. There are a lot of variables involved. What kind of bulb (brand, rating), dumb switches can also present problematic scenarios. I had had tickets that the dumb switch was replaced with a higher rated (amperage) switch and it worked great. LED bulbs can also create an extreme headache especially when a dumb switch is involved. I have had in my own setup where I had to change the bulbs (same kind/model/wattage) and it all worked, no idea why .
