Blue 2-1 Working Canless Wafer Survey

I am looking to install ~ 40 Blue 2-1 switches in the next 6-8 months for a house renovation. Those would control many canless wafer LEDs several in 3/4 way configurations. In trying to determine which LEDs to use for a trouble (flicker/hum) free setup, I have found very little information. I tried the compatibility app which had very few entries and seemed dated (based on an entry that was no longer available and replaced with another light). Also, there is no date or firmware associated with the information. Scrolling through posts I coincidently see a comment about a brand of light that was working but no other relevant information like number of lights connected, switch setup (single pole on/off, 4 way dimming, etc.), firmware, trailing or leading edge switch configuration and so on.

I was also considering the Lutron switches and they have extensive compatibility testing available. One is through this link LED Compatibility Tool | Lutron and the other through this link LED Product Selection Tool (lutron.com). I used the second tool and came up with the list below as a starting point for lights that are potentially compatible with a Blue 2-1 . I searched for a few brands that are locally available at the big box stores and would work with Lutron’s consumer smart switches (Casetta and Diva). What I found was a dimming range that varied from trailing to leading edge (TE or LE) or switch to switch. There are many, many other brands tested against their entire switch line if you wish to look for yourself. I know their switch designs are not the same as the Blue but wanted some data with switches that the TE/LE could be configured.

Responding will not only help me but hopefully save others from buying and incompatible or less compatible light. This will also allow a dialogue with the commenter if needed. What I am hoping for is for users to provide their experience with working Blue switches and provide the following information:

Light model #:
Number of lights being controlled:
Switch mode (toggle, dimmer - 1,3 or 4 way):
Firmware version:
Leading (LE) or Trailing edge (TE):
Dim level range (Approx.):
Any Comments:

A few months ago, my parents installed 40 of these at their house. Rock solid dimming performance with the red / blue 2-1s in trailing edge mode down to 1% brightness. All setups are either single pole or Aux connected with neutrals with at least 4 lights on each switch.

So far I’ve tried Ensenior and Hykolity for the thin wafers and have found that they do flicker every so often. Not much but I think I’m just super sensitive to LED flicker and notice even the slightest bit of it.

I’ve also got Philips dimmable A19 style bulbs in ceiling fixtures and they also do flicker.

Granted all LEDs flicker, it’s just a matter of if a human eye can detect it and how good their drivers are to keep them at a steady hertz so it doesn’t become apparent to human eyes.

None of them buzz or hum.

“The Hook Up” on YouTube has done some testing of LED A19 bulbs. You may be able to try those brands and see if they make wafer lights.

I’ll be keeping my eye on this thread if it takes off to hear more people chime in with what they’ve tried and tested

Thanks for the response. I was actually looking at the Amico but on the product page it says “Note: Smart dimmers are not recommended”. It could be related to only leading edge dimmers.

Have you tried a trailing edge configuration on the dimmer instead of the default leading edge?

Yes, it affects the dimming range which can be adjusted thru the switch but like I said the flicker is still there and sensitivity is dependent person to person. Flicker I notice, my wife doesn’t all the time. In all reality it actually irritates me quite a bit but nobody else has said anything about it. I guess I’ll probably start asking friends and family if they notice it or if I’m just overly sensitive to changes

How about turning off all the power/energy reporting parameters?

I haven’t tried it with other smart dimmers, but with the 2-1s it is fine. I’m generally very sensitive to flickering so I was pleasantly surprised to not have any from these.
