Blue Series 2-1 Not Controlling Lights

I’ve been using the Blue Series 2-1 switch for a few months in Smart Bulb Mode. I recently decided to move away from smart bulbs in the room using this switch and found that I can’t control the lights using the switch (either in Home Assistant or via the paddle). Neither on/off or dimming does anything.

I’m pretty sure this worked when I initially installed the switch so I’m not sure what changed. I checked line/load and tested with a dumb switch and it appears to be working correctly there, so I don’t think I have those wires mixed up.

I’ve also tried a factory reset and that didn’t seem to help at all. Is there anything else I should be trying to troubleshoot?

I’ll ask the obvious question since I didn’t see it mentioned in your post – did you reprogram the switch so that it’s no longer in SBM?

I would’ve guessed that a factory reset would’ve reset back that off, but perhaps current settings persist thru it.

Yes, I did turn off Smart Bulb Mode (sorry for leaving that out  ). I did notice an error message in ZHA that I can reproduce if I turn it back on and off again:

Failed to call service switch/turn_off. 'uint8_t' object is not iterable

This only happens once so if I turn it back and off a second time, there’s no error.

One other thing I noticed is that my Active Power numbers in Home Assistant have been showing 0.0 for the past few hours (after I started messing with the bulbs). Could that be pointing to something wrong with my neutral wire?

I’m not a HA user, so I can’t help with that side of things, but it’s certainly possible a neutral (or any other wiring) got loose while working on the fixture and switch – may be worth checking the integrity of all wiring connections (switch box and fixture) to be 100% sure.

I am wondering if you actually successfully did a factory reset. If your switch is not controlling the load via the paddle, it’s possible that it’s still in the SBM or local control is disabled. I know you said you turned it off, but HA threw an error, so I’m wondering if it’s still on.

If SBM or local protection are still on, then you probably woudln’t have been able to factory reset because the keypresses wouldn’t have worked (probably . . . this is true for either the blue or the red but I can’t remember which.)

I would try using the keypresses to ensure SBM is off and local protection is off:

To disable Smart Bulb Mode on your Blue Series 2-1 Switch, hold down on the bottom part of the paddle (off) while simultaneously tapping the configuration button four (4) times (do not let go of the paddle when finished tapping the config button). Wait for the LED Bar to flash solid blue (and then let go of the paddle) indicating the switch has disabled Smart Bulb Mode.

To disable Local Protection Mode (Parameter 256) on your Blue Series 2-1 Switch, hold down on the bottom part of the paddle (off) while simultaneously tapping the configuration button ten (10) times (do not let go of the paddle when finished tapping the config button). Wait for the LED Bar to flash solid red (and then let go of the paddle) indicating the switch has disabled Local Protection Mode.

There are videos with the online manual. If you find that one or both of those is ON, turn them OFF and see if you’ve regained paddle functionality.

You ought to be able to factory reset then as well if you need to clean up settings further.

Thanks. I’m pretty sure everything was in there tight but I’ll take another look.

Thank you both. I double-checked the wiring and manually turned off smart bulb mode but still no luck. The fact that the Active Power stopped working and I can’t turn off the lights makes me think I damaged the neutral wire somehow while switching out my LED can lights and now I’m stuck in non-neutral mode. I’ll likely switch back to the smart lights so I can turn them off that way and have an electrician take a look the next time I need one for something else.

Quick update: I tested the same wires with a different smart switch and that switch worked as expected. It looks like the problem is with the switch hardware. I’m going to look into replacing the switch. Thanks again for the help.
