Wanting to install the Blue Canopy Dimmer Switch combo and I’m confuse on what I’m seeing for the wiring on the switches. House was built in 1999 in GA. These two switches operate an over head fan/light combo unit, both have pull chains.
Single Gang:
Two cables coming into the switch box.
Top White goes to wire nut, top Black and Ground goes to Switch.
Bottom Black goes to wire nut, bottom White and Red goes to Switch.
Yes, the wire nut has a Black from bottom cable and a White from the top.
You’re going to have to a bit of testing, but it looks like a 3-way non-neutral where power goes to the light.
In the single-gang box, undo the white/black bundle and use a non-contact tester to check if the white wire is continuously hot. Test with the other switch in both positions.
If that’s hot, put the bundle back together. Then in the double-gang box, remove the black from the switch and test to see if that is constantly hot.
In the double-gang box, is the black conductor on the black screw?
In the single-gang box, is the black conductor on the black screw?
Spent some time tearing apart everything and doing some continuity testing with my multimeter. Hopefully you can decipher my chicken scratch. Looks to be non neutral wire 3way with power at the switch.
If I’m reading the top part of the document correctly where it has this picture/chart (picture below), I will need to buy and install this Auxiliary Switch.
Then under the section: Multi-Way (3-Way) + Auxiliary / Add-On Diagrams
3-Way Non-Neutral Wire Installation
You must install the smart switch where there is a line (120V) present and you cannot install it where there are only travelers (this is reflected in the schematics below). The only approved aux switches are ones made by Inovelli, GE / Honeywell (now Jasco), or HomeSeer. Additionally, you must program your switch to work with an add-on switch after you restore power by holding down the top of the paddle while tapping down on the config button 5x, then releasing (switch will blink pink to confirm) as shown in the GIF below.
But this brings up a good question that I don’t see in these diagrams, the Smart Fan & Light Canopy Module, will that still work with this? How does it maintain power?
