I had a white series light/dimmer switch connected to Home Assistant via Thread working mostly fine. It and a few other devices would intermittently go offline, so I decided to change the Thread channel. Everything rejoined on the new channel fine apart from this one switch, so I decided to delete it from HA and repair it to try to fix it.
Unfortunately, I can’t get it to rejoin. I did a factory reset (config+up for 20 seconds until red light). Going through pairing on the Home Assistant app on my Android phone, the light pulses blue when I start the process, so something is happening, but the app displays the following sequence:
Searching for device
Connecting to device
Generating Matter credentials
Checking connectivity to Thread network ha-thread-ad28
Can’t connect to thread network ha-thread-ad28 - Check that your device can work with this network type and try again
Not sure what the issue is. The rest of the thread devices are working fine, including another Inovelli fan switch, so there’s seemingly OK communication on the Thread network.
I’m not sure what the exact process is between my phone and the switch… is there a bluetooth communication first of all, and then it tries to connect to Thread? Sometimes my phone will go through the above cycle of statuses, but the switch itself is not pulsing blue, so does it just go through that cycle even if it’s not ‘connected’ to the switch?
What firmware version is that switch if you know? Mine are 1.0.4 and my (familiar sounding) issue below.
I had a similar issue only mine originated by trying to effectively redo the whole Thread connection by nuking the Thread and starting over. None of my switches would re pair with Home Assustant at all. Spent hours on it. I don’t remember how I found logs but there were timeouts in there around the Credentials stage so that sounds pretty familiar.
In the end for me I made my Apple HomePod Thread network the primary, joined the Home Assistant ZBT2 antenna to that and told HA to use the HomePod credentials for joins. Then things worked. Given you said you’ve got an Android phone I’m suspecting you don’t have HomePods but I don’t know of maybe some android devices act as Thread routers you might be able to try? Of course too much tinkering could leave you in a worse position. So proceed with caution doing anything that would cause the existing network to glitch out. Wondering if 1.0.4 firmware might be a common thread (no pun intended with Thread)
It’s 1.0.5 firmware, I’m sure. I was planning to upgrade it to the new one, but can’t now. No HomePod or anything else. Have a ZBT-1 and an SLZB-MR4 but it’d be OTBR for both of them.
OK, managed to get it to rejoin. I synced the Matter credentials in the app again. I had already tried this, and got the message that the credentials were the same, but I just tried it again and it said they were now synced, and it added back straight away.
At a 1.0.5 firmware, is yours the Dimmer, not just the On/Off switch? I believe On/Off tops at version 1.0.4.
But either way, glad to hear you got it working! I understand the frustration all too well. Personal opinion, I kinda wish I went Zigbee being tried-and-true. Thread/Matter feels like we’re beta testing at best with the standards and how products interface in across manufacturers. Glad you’re back up and going.
