Connecting white dimmer switch with hue bulbs

I am having trouble controlling hue bulbs with the white dimmer switch. I put the switch in smart bulb mode and lose all control of the bulb. Can someone tell me what I need to do?

So the Smart Bulb Mode makes sure that the bulb is powered full-time, which is correct. To control your bulb, you’ll need to use hub automations triggered by multitaps on the switch.

If you had a blue series dimmer, you could bind the dimmer to the bulb, which would give you a “normal” experience of dimming and on off as if you were connected to a dumb bulb.

I use White dimmers with Hue Bulbs connected to the Hue Bridge. Personally, I use a third party Edge driver ([ST Edge] Philips Hue LAN [BETA] (3rd Party Driver, Not ST Native) - Writing Edge Drivers - SmartThings Community) that allows me to bring in the my Groups/Zones and Scenes. Once the Inovelli is in Smart Bulb Mode, you need to create a routine for each button press. My setup is using Button 1 (paddle up) to turn on a Hue Smart Scene. Button 2 (paddle down) turns off the Hue Group/Zone. Button 3 (config) sets a default theme (in my case Bright at 70% to be used overnight if needed).

Thank you, so there is currently no way to get a seamless dimming effect with the white series?

So I just need a blue switch to achieve this?

Yes and you can’t use the Hue Bridge either. See Setting Up Zigbee Bindings • SmartThings | Inovelli Help Center.

I don’t have that particular device combination, but I can’t see why it wouldn’t be possible if your controller supports building rule automations that utilize the Hold (for start raising/lowering) and Release (for stop raising/lowering) capabilities.

So while there’s no way to bind the devices directly when cross-protocol, it should entirely possible via automation.
