Having trouble figuring out how to wire a black series 3 way switch

Just moved to a new house and I’m looking to get my switches all set back up. I’ve got 2 black series dimmers I’d like to use with a 3 way switch that’s got the light in the middle, but I’m having trouble getting it wired properly. At one end, there’s a 3 wire + ground romex in the box, nothing else. All wires are somehow hot? At the other end, I’ve got 3 romex wires coming in, 2 have 2 wires + ground, 1 has 3 wires + ground.

The wires aren’t super easy to see in the pictures, but I’ll try to explain here:

2 black wires are connected via a push connector, one I’m assuming is line, the other is the black wire coming from the 3 wire + ground romex.

2 neutral wires are connected via a push connector, one from the same romex that I believe is line, the other is coming from the 3 wire + ground romex.

All ground wires are connected together.

Traveler wire from the 3 wire + ground connects to the traveler terminal in the switch, neutral connects to the 2 neutral wire push connector mentioned earlier, the last 2 wire + ground romex has it’s white and black wires connected to the line/load terminals on the switch.

At the other end is a classic on/off toggle switch, traveler wire is connected to the traveler terminal, ground to ground, and then white/black connected to the line/load terminals.

Currently as it’s set up, if the classic switch is off, everything is off. Black Series dimmer turns off completely and I can’t control the light.

What do I need to do to get the wiring corrected so that the 3 way works as expected again? Is it possible to connect both black series dimmers? Or do I need to use an aux switch?

Thank you!

Since these are Black Gen 2, you’ll have to use one switch and an Aux if you want this wired as a 3-way. You can wire for 2 switches, but the non-load switch will be a scene controller only and you will have to use automations to operate the load switch. That may be your preference.

How do you know the light is in the middle? Did you inspect the light box? It’s possible it is, IF the 2nd 2-wire in the 3 Romex box is sending power downstream, but it’s also possible this is on the end of a run and you have a line and load in the same box (hence the two 2-wires).

Do you have pictures with the original switches pulled? It’s tough to diagnose after you have moved conductors and re-wired.
