Home Assistant Not Showing Firmware Info for Some Inovelli White Series Smart Dimmer Switches (Matter Integration)

I’ve been using Home Assistant to manage my smart home, and I recently started pairing nearly a dozen Inovelli White Series Smart Dimmer Switches. I’ve added all of them via Matter, and for the most part, it’s been smooth sailing.

For some of these switches, Home Assistant displays the firmware version (displays up-to-date) and even indicates whether it’s up-to-date. (See attached image for an example of a working one.)

However, for a few switches, Home Assistant doesn’t show the firmware version at all (displays unknown). Oddly enough, it does show all of the other entities just fine, like dimming levels, power monitoring, etc. (See attached image for an example of one missing the firmware info.)

I’ve tried the usual troubleshooting steps:

  • Resetting the switch
  • Repairing the switch
  • Updating Home Assistant to the latest version
  • Confirming the switches have the same Matter integration setup

Has anyone else run into this issue? Is there a way to refresh the device info in Home Assistant or force a firmware check?

EDIT: Here is an example of another switch that I just added and Home Assistant is telling me that a firmware version is available

My workaround to get this device from 1.0.0 to 1.0.5 was to connect it via Matter to “Apple Home Kit”.

After connecting, Apple Home Kit tells me that there is an update available. I waited patiently and it installed successfully.

Next, I reset the switch and re-paired it back to Home Assistant.

At this point, it is on firmware version 1.0.5 but the version still says “unknown” in Home Assistant.

I have 3 Inovelli white series dimmer switches.

All 3 are paired to HA and Apple Home. The FW update became available in HA first for all 3 of mine, so i updated them in HA (couple weeks ago or so).

Here’s how one of the switches look in HA, it shows rhe actual FW version in top section under ‘device information’ and shows ‘up to date’ further down under ‘configuration’ section.

Please let me know how I could help at all else.

I know matter over thread relies heavily on ipv6, so is that fully enabled on your network? (Just trying to help). And what are you using in HA as your Matter hub? Lastly, and as we know, Matter is still in its infancy and especially in HA, it’s still listed as ‘Matter beta’.

Hello - Yes, IPv6 is fully enabled because I have 20 Inovelli Smart Dimmer (White Series) installed.

I’ve updated a majority of them through Home Assistant, but some show the update as unknown so I connected through to Apple Home and updated it from there.

I’ve noticed when these lights are working manually (after a full reset and removal from all smart home systems), the lights turn on, stay on, and turn off perfectly fine in dimmer mode (trailing).

However, after connecting to a Matter over Thread device (my radio is an SLZB-06m connected to Home Assistant), the lights start to flicker even though it’s just left “on”

Curious if I set my router up to accept IPv6 but my ISP doesn’t support IPv6 is that going to be a problem for me? I’m able to get the whites to connect to Home Assistant but I’m having a hard time getting updates to stick on a few of them. Also how do get the device to Apple Home Kit through Home Assistant? Thank you

I don’t see that as a problem.

To update your switches, I recommend completely removing them from Home Assistant and factory resetting the White Series switches.

Then, connect it via Matter to Apple HomeKit and update it from there. Apple Home will tell you that there is an available firmware update to 1.0.5. Please allow this a nice… 5-10 minutes, at least.

Once updated, you can factory reset the switch again (it will maintain the firmware version 1.0.5), wiping it out from Apple Home, and then re-adding it to Home Assistant.

Once you finally have the updated switches added back to Home Assistant:

  • Add an integration called “HomeKit Bridge”
  • Add a new bridge and call it whatever you want
  • Make sure it is bridge mode and set to “includes”. I’ve set it to include "covers (my shades) and lights (the Inovelli Switch)

From here, you will notice that you’ll get a notification in Home Assistant. If you open that up, it will be a QR code for you to scan in Apple Home. This is an awesome feature because you can have 100 devices added to Home Assistant, but only “expose” specific devices that you want back to Apple Home Kit.

Three things please.

1- ohhhh fancy, I have a slzb-06 as well but us it in HA a my zigbee coordinator in Z2M, never switched it to use as Thread radio.

2- I had same experience with two of my white series dimmer switches as well, where they’d work fine when not paired to any smart home home but the light would flicker sometimes and led bar would switch colors when paired to Apple Home and or HA. I discovered that the load was too small, just small wattage LED bulbs. So based off my search here in the Inovelli Community I discovered I needed to inatall 2 of these in ceiling light the flickering problem has completely gone away since.

Features

  • Eliminates (in most cases) bulb flickering at low levels in neutral and non-neutral setups
  • Required with your non-neutral compatible Inovelli switch for non-neutral installations
  • Miniature size (about the size of a US quarter stacked six high) makes it easy to install at the light fixture
(they are also available on Amazon)

3- to 100% make sure your ipv6 is working.
Test your IPv6

thanks for listening!
