How to fit 2 switches in 2-gang box when mount holes are too far apart

I have two blue series switches (dimmer and fan). I am trying to replace a pair of old slider switches (happen to be Lutron brand), in what looks like a standard 2-gang box to me. The old sliders fit in a 2-gang plate just fine, but these two new Inovelli switches, when mounted as close as the ovals allow them to be, are still way too far apart to fit in the 2-gang plate’s openings. I have tried the original plate and a brand new Leviton 2-gang plate (part of my house-wide replacement of old switches and outlets).

Is there a specific 2-gang plate that is needed for these?

Also, why does this forum require me to select vsd30k? When I search for the VZM35SN, it shows there is a tag but says it cannot be used in this category.

Can you provide an image?

I hope those qr codes don’t share any info they shouldn’t be… Being blue series ZigBee switches I figure it should be safe to post.

The original lutron slider switches do have a very slightly longer oval that seems to let them push close enough together.

What does the box itself look like? Trying to determine WHY they are spread apart as much as they are.

Can you possibly take another photo without the switches screwed into the box?

I can try in a few minutes when I can power off the circuit

Ah, it appears that those are two separate single gang boxes next to each other, with part of the shared side cut out. It seems like the one on the right was the original and instead of changing it correctly, an old work box was attached to the side of the original one.

You should really replace that with a new 2 gang old work box.

Odd, not sure why previous slider switches had no problem with this box…

I think you correctly identified why earlier in the thread. The Lutron’s seem to have a wider oval. If you can’t change out the box or someone get them closer together, the only other thing I can think to do is get a Dremel and widen the ends of the ovals on the Inovelli switches.

I spent a fair bit of time trying to widen the oval, both via a rotary tool (dremel like), and via drill bit on an electric drill. After getting some widening but barely half the distance I needed, I noticed the top oval was covering that grey plastic bit that is part of the joining mechanism. I found a drill bit by sizing with the existing proper mounting hole and drilled a new hole in that grey plastic. There is no corresponding grey part at the bottom, so that switch is now mounted with just the top screw, using the 2-gang face plate plus the pressure against the box/wall to keep it alligned properly.

Thanks for the suggestions/help.
