Issue with Blue Series 2-1 (VZM31-SN) – Light stays dim when turned off (Hubitat)

Hi everyone,

I’m running into a strange issue with my Blue Series 2-1 (VZM31-SN) switch on Hubitat and hoping someone might have seen this before.

When the switch is turned on, the light turns on as expected. However, when I turn it off—either at the switch or via Hubitat—the light does not go completely off. Instead, it remains dimly lit.

Here are a few details:

  • The switch is configured in smart bulb mode = off.
  • Load control is enabled, and it’s controlling a standard dimmable LED light.
**** Neutral is connected (but reporting non-neutral)!!!***
  • Firmware is up to date.
  • Behavior is consistent whether I use the switch manually or through Hubitat.

Has anyone experienced this kind of “ghost dim” behavior when the switch is turned off? Could it be a wiring issue (e.g., leakage current), driver configuration, or something else?

Appreciate any insights or troubleshooting tips.

Thanks,
Jean-François

A neutral config reporting as non-neutral suggests a wiring problem. As a first step, pull the switch and double check your connections to make sure that they are tight and that a conductor did not become disconnected when they switch was tucked in. Make sure that the conductors are landed in between the backing plate and the screw, so that as the screw is tightened, the backing plate draws the conductor toward the outside of the switch.

After some troubleshooting, I discovered that the neutral wiring to the switch itself was fine, but the issue was with the bundled neutral and the cable going to the switch. Once corrected, the switch began functioning properly—off meant fully off.

Thanks and hope this helps if someone else runs into a similar issue!

Best,
Jean-François
