LZW36 - Lights won't dim

Oh man, this is totally my fault. I was multi-tasking and didn’t fully read your message.

I read:

But I missed the context around it about how it’s still not dimming. My bad.

That’s definitely weird that the bulbs aren’t dimming.

Let me put my thinking cap on for this one. I left my laptop at work, so it’s a bit challenging to answer this on mobile, but I’ve put it in my calendar for revisit tomorrow morning.

OK thanks Eric. Not a super critical/urgent thing. The lights do turn on/off so critical functionality is there. I’ll try a few different things here on my side as well to try and narrow things down.

Ok, sorry for the delay – got side-tracked yesterday.

Can you do me a favor and share some log info with me?

I don’t think there’s any private data shown, but if you’d feel more comfortable sending it to me via a PM (include @EricM_Inovelli too) that’s fine.

Basically, what I want to see is if the hub is receiving the dim commands. I realize this is likely a canopy issue, but there’s no way for us to see what’s being sent to the canopy, so my thought process is that I want to see if, at least, the switch is sending a dim level to the hub.

Outside of that, it may honestly be a faulty canopy and we can get you a replacement to see if that fixes it.

Ok, let’s try something else bc that was honestly much harder to read than I thought it would be lol.

Can you take a screenshot next time for me?

But, regardless, let’s try this sequence:

  • In your ST App, set the dimmer to 75%, then move it to 50%
    • Share with me the logs (screenshot please) – I’m looking for something that shows 75 and 50
  • Now press the main button (the square one) to turn the light off
  • Then press the main button again to turn the light on
    • Share with me the logs (screenshot please) – I’m looking for it to reach the last level you had it prior, which would be 50
  • Hold the rocker up until the LED Bar reaches the top and let go
    • Share with me the logs – I’m looking for it to send a value of 99 to the hub

Hit 49% instead of 50%

Hmmm… everything appears to be working correctly from the switch to hub. Let’s try swapping out the canopy to see if that fixes it.

Can you shoot @Courtney_Inovelli and I a PM with your order info and mailing address? I for some reason couldn’t pull it up based on your email.

Any update on this issue? I have the same behavior with my LZW36 install yesterday.

I can control the fan speed (low/med/high) on both the physical switch and Hubitat, but I can only turn on/off the light. When setting dimmer level to anywhere between 1 and 100 it will turn the light full on. Setting the dimmer level to 0 will turn off the light. It seems the dimmer portion communicate with Hubitat fine as I can see the dimming level change, but the canopy to the light seems to be either off or on and nothing in between.

Hmmm… just to clarify, if you set it from the Hubitat dashboard to any level, the light goes to full brightness (ie: if you enter 43, the bulb goes to 100%)? If so, does the dashboard reflect the level you set it to?

In other words, if you set it to 43 in Hubitat and the bulb goes to 100%, does it show 43 in Hubitat? Or does it show 99/100?

@EricM_Inovelli – is this in our bugs doc?

Hi @Eric_Inovelli
If I set the light level to 43, the dashboard display the level to 43, but the actual light bulbs brightness is no different than 100% brightness.

Hi Eric,
With another user seeing the exact same issue on a recently installed unit, I wonder if there’s a bad batch of recently produced canopy modules that have a light dimming issue?

Not that we’re aware of. We haven’t produced any of these switches since Oct 2020 so they’ve all been coming from the same batch for about 8 months now.

@Eric_Inovelli I think I have solved the mystery. In my case, it has to do with the light kit that comes with the fan. The light kit’s fixture has 3 bulbs. What I did was swapping out one of the B12 LED bulb with a B12 incandescent bulb (40W), then I am able to see the light dim (all 3 bulbs dim). So it seems with all LEDs installed, it just did not draw enough current to dim the light. Do you think adding a Aeotec bypass between the light fixture and the switch housing worth a try?

Very interesting. We can certainly give it a shot! Shoot @Courtney_Inovelli and I a PM and we’ll send you one on us to try. If it solves the issue, we can send @j2johnson one too!

@Eric_Inovelli Thanks for the offer, I do have one lying around in my toolbox and I was able to put it on the fan light fixture. I can report the dimming do work after I put the bypass and with all 3 LED bulbs.

I have to say the dimming seems to be smoother with one incandescent bulb vs the bypass. But it works.

I can confirm that switching to all incandescent lights also resolved the issue for me so I think that’s likely the issue. Switching out just one bulb helped but they they were different color temps and dim levels so I just switched out all 3. It’s an odd issue. I wonder if the fan electrics somehow factor into it or you’d think everyone with LED in their fan would be having the issue.
