Mudring - two 3-way switches - won't fit

For some reason my electricians installed a mudring on an interior wall.
I have used Blue Series Smart Dimmers for pretty much EVERY SINGLE switch in my house, and I’m really liking them.

However, two blue’s won’t fit in a mudring. This is known.

I have a BUNCH of 3-ways and some 4 and 5 ways.

The way my electrician wired everything, we ended up having to basically make all of the 3-way switches function through zigbee bindings and group bindings.

Now, my question is:
Can I get a zigbee “dumb-ish” dimmer which I can then zigbee bind to my Innovelli Blue which controls the lights in my 3-way scenario?

Do you all know of one with a “SLIM” profile, so that I can fit it into the mudring with my other Blue Dimmer? This will solve my “2 Blue’s won’t fit in a mudring” problem. I only need a few mm’s…

I can’t see into your box to see what you have going on there, but can you possibly gracefully remove that mud ring and replace it with a box extender? The plastic box extenders are typically square, not rounded like mud rings. Plus they’re easy to hack up if need be.

I have mud rings. It was really easy to file down the corners of the mud rings until the switches fit. Any metal file should do the trick.

@UngluedChalice So, I’m really intrigued by this idea. I feel like I’ll have to “open up” the entire corner of the mudring though. Is that not the case?
Can you attach a pic of where you filed down so they would fit?
Was it only that little front space that curves inward?
I am NOT shy about getting after that bastard with a big ass metal file…

This is a better look into it.

I feel like this would be a LOT to file down…

Just used this file from my chain saw sharpening kit and did the corner. Didn’t take much.

In other news, that might be the biggest wire nut I’ve ever seen on the neutral bundle

I realize there’s numerous neutrals under it, but that seems like a good opportunity to reclaim some box-fill wiggle room.

Indeed. The electricians called them “Big Blues”.

I got after it and made everything fit. Thanks for your suggestions.

I am still curious if there are lower profile zigbee dimmers that are made to just act as “bindable” 3-ways. Anybody ever seen anything like that?

Thanks again everyone!

I’ve had good luck getting some new mud rings from home depot. Seems that at least a couple of the new designs have much more open corners. I’ve just been cutting the drywall/ mud to the edge of the old mud ring, unscrewing it, pulling it out, then putting the new one in place. A standard 2-gang cover plate will cover past the edge of the mud ring, so I haven’t even had to re-mud

I’ve seen a plastic one that is square cornered and leaves lots of space.

Oh boy, yes, I went through this. I was replacing two existing smart switches that were my remaining SmartThings vestigial devices (using ZigBee) with two White Series switches to get me entirely on Thread. I really thought it’d be simple considering I already fit two large smart dimmer switches in the box. Turns out the White Series switches were just slightly even larger, and I needed a millimeter or two of clearance due to the mudring. I tried snipping some of the round corner off, which did not work. I wanted to try filing like in an above reply but didn’t have the right tool (and the Dremel bit I bought wasn’t going to do the trick with my drill). My last resort was replacing the metal mudring with a plastic one pictured above…and honestly that should have just been the first step. It was dead simple to shave off some already crumbling drywall using a utility knife, then remove two screws from the mudring, pull it out, and install the square plastic replacement. Everything fit (well, just barely, I have more wires than I care to admit in this box) and I considered myself done. So that’s my recommendation.

This is the “Carlon 2-Gang 5/8 in. PVC ENT Box Mud Ring” for less than $3 at Home Depot. I tried the 1/2 in. first, it was too deep.
