Hey guys I’m looking to add a wall mounted tablet as a home assistant dash and the spot that I want to add it has no power outlet near by for my other tablet there was an outlet right there I ran a new outlet to the tablet hight off that and boom good to go.
However I do have an inovelli blue dimmer right next to where I want to mount it. Can I run the outlet off the switch. To be clear I don’t want to control the outlet from the switch I just need to get power to the outlet and the only thing near by is this switch.
Yes. You can either connect the hot, neutral and ground going to the new box by bundling to the existing bundles in the switch box. You can also connect to the switch’s hot and neutral using the Line and Neutral 2nd hole. If you do that, the ground shouldn’t be daisy chained. Connect the ground going to the new box to the ground bundle.
I’d look at the 120VAC > 5VDC converters available for tablet mounts, instead of using an outlet. These allow the converter to be tucked into the box, allow for a very tight fit against the wall.
Having done this a bunch of times, don’t buy any of the cheap 120v to 5v converters. They overheat and can burn your house down. This is the only UL rated one I’ve found and it doesn’t overheat and works great.
@Bry thank you for this my boxes are metal and they are my ground so I will be pulling the ground from there as for the 120v to 5v I was planning on using a smart plug to trigger charging automation to keep the tablet battery between 20%-80% but I will look into what you suggested
@rohan thanks for the suggestion is this smart controllable by chance I was going to use a smart plug to trigger charging automation to keep the battery between 20%-80%
