I’ve recently installed about 30 red switches in my house, along with quite a few AUX. Everything is working as anticipated, except the one where I have a dumb 3-way.
Load and Line are in the same box, with the smart switch.
Incoming line feeds the smart switch
Load and Traveler on go out to the dumb switch (Red/White)
In the first box, the hot returning from the dumb switch is tied to the actual load feeding the light. The white going to the second box is tied on the load, and the red is tied on the traveler.
In the second box, the hot/black is tied to the common, and the red/white are tied to the travelers.
Paramater 22 is set to Multiway with dumb/toggle switch. I have re-interviewed, set to on/off, and reset to multiway.
The dumb 3-way must be in the “down” position for the light to turn on. If it’s up, the light turns on/off repeatedly.
Any clues?
How long is the run between the two switch boxes? There have been some recent reports of issues with a long run between the switches. That being said, I don’t know what’s acceptable and what’s not. It’s a signalling issue, apparently.
The hum is not normal. Does it work ok as a 2-way i.e. no hum?
You might want to try an Aux. Those seem to work when the dumb switch installations fail.
If I have it set to 99, I don’t get a hum. (Strangely enough, I am running in on/off mode, not dimmer). The run is about 40-50’ total
I can get it pretty stable and quiet by changing to trailing edge, and 70% max output. The actual light output appears to be 100%. When on trailing edge, it sounds much quieter (but still there, like an old timey manual dimmer)
I’m using garage LED flood lights, similar to below. Total draw when on is about 90w. Think it’s just Temu-level light quality?
Buzzing can be a sign that they switch doesn’t like the lights. It can also be a sign that a connection to the switch is loose. So it’s hard to say for sure. I’d still try the Aux when you get around to it.
