Red switch paddle won't respond

I have an inovelli red wired up in dumb mode. Initial connection to the zwave network went well, and I can see and control the switch from home assistant.

in the process of setting it up using the configure button, I got it into some weird mode here the paddle won’t do anything. Hitting up only changes the led to purple. Hitting down does nothing. I can still turn the light on and off from home assistant, but that’s it. I think the paddle is in a lock out of some kind.

I have tried factor resetting. The manuals say two different button possibilities, including holding up and configure for 20s until LED goes red, or just the configure button. The LED flashes purple meaning the factory reset didn’t take.

I have also tried removing the switch from the zwave network in hopes that the removal would trigger a reset, but I cannot get it to remove. Starting the exclusion process from home assistant, then triple-click the config, and nothing happens.

What do I do to get the paddle to either respond, or fully factory reset this switch?

Device: VZW31-SN
Firmware: 1.2
Homeassistant: 2024.12
Zwave run in a container, connected to an 800 series usb stick.

Thanks for the help

Did you try rebooting the switch by pulling the air gap?

I’ve seen that purple flashing during testing. I usually got it when entering an invalid quick tap sequence, or at least an incorrect one. At that point, paddle and config presses don’t work as they should. Rebooting the switch via the air gap or the breaker should get it back to normal.

Holy crap the easiest and most obvious solutions are of course the ones I missed. Airgap pull did the trick. Duh.

Thanks!
