I know at one point in time there were talks about this switch potentially being able to swap between thread and zigbee protocols since they use the same hardware. Is this something that still might be pursued in the future, or is that a pipe dream? That would make buying this switch a no brainer for me.
It’s hard to predict the future, but the current sentiment is probably not. There are a number of reasons why there are separate SKUs for the two protocols, but the predominant one is that the Matter code has grown to the point that it’s too large to coexist with Zigbee code on the same switch.
Some details are discussed here:
I swore there was a post after this where they walked back the possibility of serial-port updates on both the 21 and 24, but I can’t find it (and I may have dreamed that up anyway).
I’m not sure, honestly. Are you thinking about the harnesses sent out to help a couple users with firmware upgrades?
I’m sure someone will post it if there is something after the post I mentioned.
Indeed! I was one of the lucky folks that needed a harness for a firmware update. Thankfully it works, but it’s an adventure doing each switch with that tool.
Inevitably yes Whatever that answer ultimately is, I would echo Eric’s overall sentiment to just stick with Blues for zigbee and Whites for Thread/Matter. The harness is not much fun to deal with.
