VZM31-SN Blue Series – Bottom LED completely off when load is off, despite correct settings (ZHA)

Hi everyone,

I’m having a strange issue with an Inovelli Blue Series VZM31-SN dimmer and wondered if anyone has encountered something similar.

The switch is running firmware 0x01020304 and is connected to Home Assistant using ZHA. It’s controlling conventional incandescent ceiling lights, with Smart Bulb Mode disabled, Output Mode set to Dimmer, and Switch Type set to Three Way AUX.

I have several other VZM31-SN switches throughout the house, some controlling conventional lighting and others controlling Zigbee smart bulbs. I’ve been trying to standardise the LED bars so that they display the current brightness when the lights are on, and a single dim blue LED at the bottom when they’re off.

This works perfectly on all my other switches, but the Living Room Ceiling Lights switch refuses to cooperate.

When the lights are on, the LED bar behaves normally and accurately displays the dimming level. However, when the lights are switched off, the entire bar goes completely dark. The bottom LED doesn’t illuminate at all, regardless of the OFF-state brightness settings.

I’ve been configuring the switches through ZHA using the manufacturer-specific cluster 0xFC31. The relevant parameters are 17 (Load Level Indicator Timeout), set to 11; 96 (LED OFF Colour), set to 170 (blue); 97 (LED ON Intensity), set to 33; and 98 (LED OFF Intensity), which reports a value of 1. Parameter 259 (Only 1 LED Mode) is disabled.

I’ve also experimented with parameter 63, which controls the individual bottom LED’s OFF-state brightness. I’ve tried values of 5 and 50, but neither makes any difference. The LED remains completely dark when the lights are off.

I initially wondered whether ZHA was actually writing the parameters correctly, so I tried a simple experiment. I changed parameter 95, which controls the LED colour when the lights are on, from 170 (blue) to 0 (red). The LED bar immediately changed to red, so the switch is clearly receiving and responding to at least some configuration commands.

I also compared the configuration against another VZM31-SN controlling conventional dimmable LED lights in my upstairs hallway. That switch works exactly as intended, with its bottom blue LED remaining illuminated when the lights are off.

Both switches have identical firmware, Smart Bulb Mode disabled, the same global LED settings, and parameter 17 set to 11. I’ve also examined their ZHA diagnostic JSON exports, including the individual LED segment attributes, but haven’t found anything obvious that would explain the difference.

I’m beginning to wonder whether there’s another parameter that overrides the OFF-state LED behaviour, or perhaps some residual notification or configuration state that’s suppressing the display.

Has anyone come across anything similar? Is there a known firmware issue involving incandescent loads or three-way AUX configurations? Alternatively, is there a way to reset just the LED configuration without having to factory-reset and reconfigure the entire switch?

The switch otherwise works perfectly, including dimming the incandescent lights, so I’m reluctant to factory-reset it unless absolutely necessary.

I can provide ZHA diagnostic JSON exports from both the working and non-working switches if that would help.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!
