I am a little stumped as to what the wiring running to a fan box I have is doing. I’m going from a traditional “dumb” fan with 2 pull chains to some kind of fancy remote controlled fan that only takes in a hot and neutral (Not my choice, but I’ll control them via RF later).
The ceiling box has 4 wires into it. The wall box has 2 switches. One turned on the light, one turned on the fan. And then a remote 3 way switch turned on the light as well.
Essentially what I want to do is put in a Blue Series Fan switch, then a blue light switch and a white switch on the remote. Have them all be in “smart” mode.
However, with the remote switch on and both switches in the double box off there is no power at all to the ceiling box. But the moment I toggle any one of the 3 switches on I’m getting live on both the black and red in the ceiling box. I have a rough diagram drawn. Someone please help me understand what is going on here. This is a new-ish house. Maybe 20 years old. I could of course disconnect everything, cut the breaker and pull out the multimeter to trace everything, but my hope is that it is just some odd configuration that is known, but unknown to me.
Grey = White wire
Yellow = Wire nut
Grey with black slashes across = white wire with black electrical tape on it
Black rectangles above switches = wire bundles coming into the box
