Which Matter Switch?

I have a big ass fan. And they now support matter Big Ass Fans® - Support - Matter. I have a Haiku L and want to get a matter switch for it to use with home assistant.

Not sure which one to get

any suggestion would be great.

So the first thing to determine is if the fan has an AC or DC motor. According to the documentation, the Haiku L has a DC fan motor.

If the fan has a DC motor, you can’t directly control the fan via a wired connection from the switch, because Inovelli fan switches don’t work with DC motors. This also applies to the canopy module, as it doesn’t support DC motor fans either.

However, if you can connect the fan directly to your hub, then you can power the fan full time hot and power the switch full time hot (with no load connected to the switch), and then use automations to control the fan. Basically the switch becomes a scene controller in this configuration.

Either fan switch would work, but since you want Matter, you want the White Fan switch.

And in case you’re not aware, Matter binding isn’t a thing yet, AFAIK. The switch supports it but hubs don’t. So for the time being, you’re left with using automations.

“Available in a diameter of 1.3 metres, with a patented brushless DC motor for unmatched energy efficiency, we’re confident you will love your Haiku L for years to come.”

So , the switch will connected to the Haiku L directly to power and will be “on” all the time. But can use homeassistant to turn on and off lights and fan? right?
Can the white matter switch control fan speed and light dimmer?

The switch and fan should be powered full time separately. No load conductor on the switch.

I don’t know what the HA capabilities of a Matter connected BAF are. You have the fan now, right? Connect it to HA and see what you can do with it. You don’t need the switch for that.

Can (will?) Matter support bindings across different physical level protocols? The Inovelli White Series is Matter over Thread, and the Big Ass Fans are apparently Matter over wifi…

There is a utility to perform matter binding over the HA matter server until officially supported. I have bound bulb and switch and works great. shouldnt matter if devices are matter over thread / wifi as the binding is matter binding not thread binding.

Is there a name or link for the Matter binding utility that you used???

This one, maybe …

There are bunch of threads, but I believe the maintained git is here and is shows how for innovelli switches you need to use endpoint 2 for your device.

I got a quote to upgrade my Haiku fans for $285 each. Was thinking about it. Now I use a Homebridge plugin that e poses the fan in the Apple Home app.

what does the upgrade include? A new board?

Yes, a new board. The rep said:

“The board swaps are very easy to do. Where you would be looking at getting two of them for different fan sizes I would recommend just giving us a ring when you go to throw them in and we can make sure you get the right boards in the right fans and we can help with the install. It’s all accessible from the bottom side of the fan and there’s only about 8-10 screws holding the piece in depending on your light kit.”
