I want to control my ceiling fan / light combo. I currently have a 1 gang no-nuetral switch there. When I turn it on the lights come on and the fan is powered. I control the fan’s on / off and speed with the pull chain.
What I would like to do is put in a smart switch that can be used to just leave the power on so that I can continue controlling the fan with the pull switch (we rarely ever use them) while using smart bulbs that I currently already have laying around to be controlled by the switch.
Which switch would solve that issue? Is there a better set up I should be looking at?
I would start by rewiring at the fan. Remove the switch from powering the fan and power the fan directly. That way your smart lights will remain fully powered and you can control the fan from the pull chain.
During the rewiring, take the two wire going to the fan switch and connect it to the hot and neutral so that you are sending a hot and neutral to the fan switch box.
Use a Blue 2-1. All you need to do is wire the hot and neutral so that it is a scene controller. You can then either bind your smart lights to it or control them via automations.
Wow… I honestly had not thought about direct wiring the fan… That solves a lot of issues considering I’m not worried about the switch controlling it. Thank you sir!
