White dimmer config doesn't seem to work (setting up 3+-way with Aux)

I finally got Aux switches installed in a 3-way and a 4-way setup. Neither of the smart switches are doing any flashing when I hold up + 5x config clicks.

I have about a dozen white series switches professionally installed. More often than not, they did’t allow manual configuration the first try. For changing to dimmer mode, I did get them all to work eventually after 1+ full resets (up+config for 20 seconds until red). So I know how and which button to hold and press the config button to change modes.

  • I tried clicking fast and slow. I tried holding the paddle longer and shorter before, and when releasing after the taps.
  • I tried factory resetting them multiple times.
  • I paired one with Apple Home, hoping to do a software configuration, but Apple Home doesn’t seem to support that (please tell me if I am wrong).
  • I AM sure I am using the main switch and not the Aux switch - the main has a status light, the Aux doesn’t (which was an unhappy surprise by the way. I would pay more for matching devices, even if the status lights were dumb links.)

I really have no idea what else to try. Please help!

I am going to have to set up HomeBridge or HomeAssistant to get smart bulb dimming working (another unhappy surprise. I thought I had retired my HomeBridge RPi), so if this is the only way to solve configuration, I will make it a higher priority. Is this a correct assumption?

Any ideas would be amazing. Thanks!

I was able to get them to work by repeatedly factory resetting or pulling out the tab that cuts power, and trying the config sequence after each time. It took ~3-8 tries in every case, with no single pattern being the clear winner. I had the same experience setting dimmer mode. I had to get one in to both 3-way AND dimmer…that was less fun.

Am I the only one who has this issue? I did buy all the switches at the same time at the start of the year, so it could be my batch perhaps. Is there a way to check/update the firmware now that they are on and connected?
