I just replaced a Lutron DVCL-153P with an Inovelli VTM31-SN (White Dimmer) in a single-pole with neutral. The switch is controlling two of these LED ceiling lights: RL495-CCT - Elitelighting
The biggest issue is that when I turn the lights off the switch makes a click sound and then restarts, taking 20ish seconds to reconnect.
I’ve seen some other topics discussing that a load below 25W can cause issues for non-neutral installs, but my switch does have a neutral.
Is the 20W total load likely causing this issue? Or is it likely something else?
The switch should not reboot or restart with a neutral. Load doesn’t matter, the switch could be wired without a load and still work fine. So, double check the wiring.
hi Impavid, FYI I have same setup, a Inovelli white series dimmer switch with neutral wire connected, and the switch used to restart. the issue is your load, its too small, you should use 2 of these wired at the load side. I installed 2 of them at my ceiling light fixture and the problems went away, as a bonus the lights work so much better too, brighter in general and no flickering at 100% brightness and no flickering at 1% even.
Buy two of these, but you can search on this forum, you will see lots of others with same topic, it’ll affect any of the switches, white, blue, etc the same.
I also thought this only affected non-neutral setups but it sadly affects both if you load is small.
I do not agree with any posts that claim a switch with a neutral will reset because the load is too low. If you’re is doing that, it’s not actually using the neutral, or in other words something is wrong.
Lots of people are running them in virtual 3-way configurations with just a line and neutral and no load connected and those work just fine.
So after some more investigation (including rechecking all the wires) it seems to only restart when it is in the simulated on-off mode, and it does not restart when in dimming mode.
I have factory reset it more times than I care to remember and I think some times it wasn’t taking the parameter change to switch into dimming mode and that is when I was seeing this behavior. I’ve now had it consistently in dimmer mode for 12+ hours without seeing the restart behavior anymore.
Given that it doesn’t reset in dimming mode, but does consistently in on-off mode, is this something to be concerned about?
I’d agree with PJF. If you have a neutral and switch is restarting every time it’s powered off I suspect your wiring isn’t correct to the switch. I replaced 30 or so light switches with White switches over the last 3 months and a few have had this issue being described and I then double and triple checked the wiring and eventually was able to figure out the cause and fix the wiring and the issue went away. Just be 100% sure all your wiring is accurate into the switch (neutral, load, etc).
Makes sense, even though it doesn’t do it in dimmer mode the fact it was doing it in on-off mode suggests I’m missing something.
Some of the other locations in my place are more involved than I feel comfortable doing—including a 4-gang where three of the four switches are part of multiway setups and have some giant bundles of wires (8+ twisted together)—so I’ll be having an electrician come through anyways and will have him check the one I did to make sure everything is correct.
