I have several ceiling fans in my home. All of them have a light kit included with the fan. Is the best option for setting this up using the [White Series (Thread/Matter) - Smart Fan Switch] along with the White Series (Thread/Matter) - Smart Fan/Light Canopy Module. Or instead of the fan switch should I use the White Dimmer switch in it’s place? The fans are here Amazon.com: MINKA-AIRE Roto LED 52" Ceiling Fan in Coal Black Finish with Remote Control, F535L-CL : Tools & Home Improvement . There is only one switch on the wall and it controls both the fan and the light. Currently the fan uses a remote control that can is used to turn on the fan and or the light separately.
Using a canopy module with an Inovelli switch is a good option. Whether you choose Blue or White depends on your preference and whether you are in the Apple ecosystem. Both have advantages and disadvantages.
The first thing to do is ensure your fan has an AC motor. I didn’t see that spec in the link you listed. However, it probably does since it has three speeds and a reversing switch, but you should check.
You will also want to inspect your switch box to see if you have a hot and neutral or if you just have a single 2-wire coming from the fan, making it a switch loop.
I’m curious because I have purchased the fan switches. Would it be best to return the fan switches and get the regular dimmer switch with the canopy? Also it is an AC motor.
It depends upon your wiring, but I’d stay with the fan switches. They are going to be scene controllers, essentially. If your hot originates at the switch box and you will use the Smart Fan Mode, you want that load going through a fan switch, not a dimmer. If you don’t put a load on the switch and just wire around it (again, presuming the hot originates in the switch box), then it won’t matter. So if you already have fan switches, I’d keep it as is.
Ok perfect. I just wasn’t positive. So now I need to wait on the Canopy to come in.
Last question what is “Smart Fan Mode”
It’s the equivalent of the Smart Bulb Mode on dimmers. In this mode, the fan puts out full power. This setting is used when you use the switch with a canopy module because the canopy module needs full power. Again, this is presuming that your hot originates at the switch box. If the hot originates at the fan box, then your wiring will be different and this does not apply.
Also, for planning purposes, if you use the canopy, you are going to have to remove or wire around the module in the fan that communicates with the remote. The canopy must be wired directly to the fan’s motor and light.
