I have a four way circuit for which originally had a ceiling fan/light with the line at the fixture. It’s since been replaced by just a light. Any advice on how to wire a white series dimmer since I have no line at any of the 3 way switches? I an aux switch that I could use to replace one of the 3 way switches, but haven’t been able to find any wiring diagrams that would guide me in wiring this up.
You’re going to have to get the line from the fixture down to one of the outlets somehow. I honestly don’t understand how you could have ever controlled the fan/light from a switch if no line came down to any of the switches, but I guess that’s why I’m not an electrician. I suspect some pictures would help. I’m wondering (again see the “not an electrician” part) if there is a spare wire from the old ceiling fan you could use to get from the fixture to one of the switch boxes.
So you have three switches that control the ceiling fixture, which is now just a light. You think that the line originates at the ceiling box, but you believe there is no line in any of the three switch boxes.
Unless your switches are wired improperly (i.e. the neutral is being switched), you will have a line in one of your boxes. If you didn’t, the switches wouldn’t be working. If the hot and neutral originate at the ceiling box, then you’ll have a non-neutral in one of your switch boxes.
Are you sure the line originates at the switch box? To determine that you would have disconnected the incoming black and white tested it for the presence of 120 VAC.
I’d start with posting pictures of the wiring in the light box.
Of course, if you’re unfamiliar with electrical wiring, it’s best to consult with an electrician.
I think I understand my problem better now. While I have neutral wires available, none of the switches currently use them. So I’ll need to go the non-neutral approach with aux switches.
I don’t mean this in a bad way, but I don’t think you do. If the line originates in the ceiling box, as you have described, there will be no neutral conductors in the switch boxes. The neutral remains in the ceiling box. The key to being safe is knowing when you need to seek help from an electrician.
You’ll have to find the switch box with a 2-wire from the ceiling box. The Inovelli will go there as a non-neutral. The other two boxes will be Auxs. The 2-wire from the light most commonly will be in one of the 3-way switch boxes, but it is also possible that it can be in the 4-way switch box.
