White Series On/Off Switch VTM-30SN voltage spikes and auto shut off

Anyone have any idea why I’m having my VTM-30SN auto shut off with LED flashing red? I view in Home Assistant history and I see the voltage spiking to 800+ V. I’m not seeing anything like this anywhere else in my home. The problem switch is on a bathroom exhaust fan (new-ish Broan). There is another VTM-30SN (closet light) on the same breaker but it is not having any issues. No other devices are having issues. Both are running 1.0.6r1 firmware. The Bathroom light in the bottom chart is a VTM-31SN Dimmer, and it is in the box next to the problem switch. For further background, the switch is automated in HA to turn on when the bathroom light turns on, then turns off a few minutes after the light turns off, based on the humidity in the bathroom. So, the fan gets turned on and off a lot every day.

Here’s a history graph from Home Assistant of the voltage spikes, which on this occasion started before noon this morning, then caused the auto shut off this evening.

I’m pretty sure at no time today was 9,000 watts being pulled on that circuit. No breaker was tripped.

Also, I’m wondering if there is a safety issue and if I should remove this switch.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, so you commented on my thread which I need to update but I don’t think it’s a real 800V situation. Seems like something in these switches is throwing a fit when paired with an inductive load (fans, motors, etc).

If I put my EE hat on for a second, the 800V spike seems like the spike you’d see with an inductor suddenly getting energized. I’m guessing either a switch component is marginal or missing and the firmware is freaking out in response.

At any rate, I’d reach out to support - they were super helpful and I’m RMAing my blue on/off switch for a replacement switch

Thank you immensely!

I don’t have an EE hat to put on, but I also feel like it is some combo of the fan and switch and firmware. At least I’m less concerned now about my condo burning down.

I’ve actually RMAed an On/Off switch in this location before, when they were first released, and this is the replacement.

Thinking about this further, and I need to see how far back in HA history I can go, I need to check when I first saw the the problem and when I’ve updated firmware, to at least clarify if it’s related to the beta firmware (and running beta means I’m probably reporting this issue in the wrong place).

While I don’t have a solution for you, I can tell you that I’ve seen the exact same thing. On two of my White Series On/Off switches. Both on the same circuit in separate rooms. Both are controlling an outlet with LED lamps connected. There are also ceiling fans on the same circuit (coming out of the same box) but not controlled by these Inovelli switches (the fans are on an old-fashioned fan wheel/switch in the same box).

I too noticed the huge (almost certainly not “real”) voltage reading on each and they they flash red when you try to use them until you do the “air gap” reset. Then they work great for a while.

I even exchanged one and the problem persisted.

For a while, I thought that tidying up the wiring behind one of them fixed it but the issue happened again a week later.

Oddly, it seems to have stopped happening. I assumed maybe a firmware update fixed it. I think I had it happen 3-4 times for each. Now I seem to be having a reprieve for at least a month or two.
