Will an AUX switch help with my problem? (line box has no neutral but load box does)

Hi everyone. I need help figuring out if an AUX switch will solve my problem.

What I have right now:

  • Blue Series dimmer switch that I want to use on a 3-way

  • The line box has NO neutral wire

  • The load box has a neutral wire

  • Right now, my smart switch is in the load box (the one with the neutral). Dumb switch is in the line box.

The problem: When I turn off the dumb switch, it cuts all power to the smart switch. I don’t want this to happen. I know this is happening because the smart switch should be in the line box instead but the line box doesn’t have a neutral wire which is needed for the smart switch.

Will this solve my problem:

  • Put an AUX switch in the line box (the one WITHOUT the neutral)

  • Keep the Blue Series smart switch in the load box (the one WITH the neutral)

Will this work? Can the AUX switch work in the box that doesn’t have a neutral wire? Will both switches stay powered on, and will I be able to turn the light on and off from either switch? Will all smart switch functionality work this way?

Thanks for any help.

I don’t think you have a good grasp of your wiring configuration. If your line box has no neutral, then the Load box won’t either, generally speaking. If the load box is a multi-switch box, it may contain a neutral; however, if it’s from another branch circuit, it shouldn’t be used.

What type of wiring do you have? Romex or other fabric-covered conductors, or individual conductors in conduit.

If you can draw a schematic of your wiring, that would be helpful. Or post pictures that CLEARLY show the connections to the switch and into the boxes, that would be great.

It appears that you attempted to upload a picture, but it didn’t load. This may be because you’re a new user. You should now be able to upload them.

And if you don’t feel comfortable working with electricity or have a concern that you’re over your head, please consult with an electrician.

Here are some photos.

Any help is appreciated.

Ok, so you are going to have to re-explain your problem.

In your first post, you stated there was no neutral in the Line box. But in the pictures you posted, it appears to me that the Line box is the single gang box, and that is the one you have the Inovelli attached to. I see a neutral pigtail wired to the switch as well.

I don’t think the Line box is wired correctly, but I’m trying to first understand why you don’t think the Line box has a neutral. So you’ll have to explain further what you need help with.
