Zigbee On/Off Switch | Project Vernacular

Hey @Courtney_Inovelli,
First, thank you so much for the update. Glad to see they made it out of certification and are progressing.

Second, would you, Lance, or anyone else be able to forward my message above to Eric and the other members of the company if they haven’t already seen it? Are there things we might be able to do help?

I saw Inovelli’s tariff statement on your homepage. It’s really unfortunate that the company is being negatively impacted at the moment and that prices have to go up. I saw for preorders, Inovelli will absorb increased costs without passing them onto users. Has the company considered instituting a “tariff support product” or something akin to a donate button? My order included a $33 discount for preorder pricing that I’d happily donate back if it meant the company was in much better shape. If there was an option to donate even more, I’d consider it. Has that been something the team has considered as a way to help offset costs?

Bill

I think Eric has had a couple people mention that to him actually! While we do appreciate it, we aren’t asking for any money back or any donations from people for the products! We are still in good shape and looking forward to getting all the new stuff into everyone’s home!

I didn’t see this addressed here, but is the switch able to act as a variable brightness control when in smart mode? I realize the hardware is limited to binary due to relying solely on a relay. But, is the software also restricted?

That’s to say: if the unit isn’t actually handling a load, could the UI behave as though it were a dimmer? A use case would be a cheaper interface to bind to the Inovelli canopy module. Or bound to something like a Hue bulb.

Or: is the software also going to be limited to on/off mode only?

Yes, this works perfectly fine. I’ve tested both of those cases. It works just like the 2-1 when bound to something dimmable.

So, it identifies as a dimmer and can be set to various levels but only turns the load on or off then?

Correct.

Thanks Rohan!!

These new switches (or eventually the mmwave) are going to be ideal for use with the fan canopy. We’ll get full dimming functionality in smart bulb mode AND get the temp/humidity sensor!

I might have to replace a couple dimmers with these and repurpose them. Having temps in the bedrooms would be great for adjusting my HVAC dampers, without needing separate battery powered device.

Um, the temperature feature was removed (you’ll note it is no longer mentioned on the web site). They could never get the thing to read a stable temperature given how close it was to a bunch of things generating heat. The humidity sensor is also just “OK” from what I have read, as humidity is technically related to temperature. So it can tell you grossly that the humidity has gone up or down, but you probably can’t trust the actual number.

Ah that’s a shame, too bad they couldn’t get the lux sensor in there to match the design of the mmwave.

On the plus side, they’re not much/any cheaper than the 2-1 dimmer so I can just start buying those up for pretty much all lighting needs even if I don’t need dimming.

I’m wondering about the paddles. I pre-ordered a 5 pack a few months back. Now I realize that I need brown paddles for two of them. I hopped over to the shop to preorder them, and the paddles. Interestingly, colored switches are available (or perhaps they are just white ones that ship with the color paddle). Any idea of how long it will take for paddles to go on sale after switch availability?

I see the status on the website has updated!

The description says it’s currently in Phase 7, but Phase 6 is still highlighted. Description also says delivery to HQ is late June, and delivery to us is late June - August.

Is the turn around that quick that you are able to start sending them out as soon as you receive them, and have so many orders that it’ll take 2 months to get everything sent out?

Or is that supposed to be late June to HQ and July - August to us?

@rohan, could you please provide clarification: what is the device actually exposed as in Z2M or ZHA? Reason I ask is: I use Z2M and HA at home. I have several VZM36 canopy modules. If I’m remotely controlling the lights, I prefer to do that via the bound wall dimmer so that the LED bar properly reflects the actual level of the canopy module. I’d love to do the same with the fan, having the dimmer briefly show the fan level as it does when tapping the config button, but that’s another issue.

For cases where I have a VZM31 2-1 as the control, this works flawlessly. I can set brightness, do brightness_move, brightness_step, etc. I see the LED bar update/animate, and the command is relayed to the canopy module. Everything is in sync.

For the one case where I’ve repurposed a VZM35 Fan Dimmer as the wall control, this is really annoying. I can’t use brightness, brightness_step, brightness_move etc… All I can do is set fan_state to ON or OFF or set fan_mode to low, medium, or high. These few quantized values is not enough for light control, and too many differences to make it kind of behave like a light. So, for this room, I need remotely control the canopy module until I get VZM31 2-1 to replace the VZM35 Fan Control with. Of course this means I get a bit of a “split brain” between the dimmer and canopy module where the dimmer isn’t displaying the correct level, or interacting with the dimmer provides unexpected results.

I figured the new on/off switch would appear as a switch. A binary switch without level control. Even with Level Control exposed by the VZM35, I just can’t seem to bend it to act as a light. What does the new on/off switch do differently than the fan control dimmer so that it behaves more “flawlessly” when bound to a light?

To clarify; to “act as a light”, the bare minuimum I need is some means to set the brightness, step the brightness (immediate), and move to a brightness (ramping). I do not care if it is called “brightness”, nor do I care about color or temperature.

It appears exactly as the same as the 2-1 does (like a dimmable light) with a few extra attributes.

I got a shipping notice that my switches are going out. W00t!

That’s awesome! For Canadian customers, I assume it will be available on http://Aartech.ca?

Hi there,

At the moment, the On/Off switches will not be available for purchase on their site; however, this can certainly change in the future!

Thanks @Kaleb_Inovelli - really hoping it does change. I will buy two if/when it does. I would buy it direct, but I’ve heard of major duties costs for items shipped from the US lately…

Agreed, aartech is a must for Canadians.

@Kaleb_Inovelli is it just a matter of them wanting to stock it, or is Inovelli holding back? I can reach out to them and inquire about stocking them, I am setup as a commercial client on their “pro” site.

Mine still hasn’t shipped yet. Do we just need to wait longer for pre-orders to get slowly processed?
