Wondering if something like this is possible, and if so, do I need two smart switches to achieve this or just an AUX switch in a multiway setting, and if I need to do any special wiring beyond what is the default for 3 way settings.
I have lights that are controlled at two locations.
From one location A, I would like pressing “off” on the switch to not immediately turn off the lights, but instead trigger some scripts on HA which may turn off the lights later.
At the other location B, “off” on the switch should turn off the lights.
These lights are not smart lights.
I imagine that:
I could attach 2 smart switches, put location A’s switch to “smart bulb” mode so that it doesn’t actually turn off anything, and then have automation always control switch B to control the lights. Everything wired the standard fashion for 2 smart switches.
Somehow be able to do this with the AUX switch, where AUX is at location A?
My first impression is that Aux vs smart switch isn’t going to matter. With the load switch in the SBM, both the switch and Aux or switch and switch are scene controllers. In every instance, pressing either switch is going to send a message to the hub to trigger an automation.
EDIT: If you use 2 smart switches and DO NOT bind them, then one of them is just a scene controller. The scene controller would send the message to the hub to kick off the script to delay and NOT directly interact with the load switch, which wouldn’t need to be in the SBM.
Have you considered wiring the switch with an Aux normally and just using a double-tap down to delay the lights turning off? That way you have both functions from either location. Perhaps not ideal if you are relying on others to remember the sequence.
Location B is just connected to line and neutral. It operates as a scene controller where HA uses the button presses or changes in the dim level to do something.
An aux can be setup so that HA receives different scenes from it vs the smart switch but with an aux either both locations control on-off or they don’t, there is no way to have one location control on-off and the other location not.
Does that mean only the switch that doesn’t have “load” will be able to act as scene controller?
Because based on the above diagrams, it looks like which switch gets “load” is determined by the electrical wiring of the house? That means I can’t actually control which switch is A vs B?
Since you will have a 3-wire between the switches, you outht to be able to place the load switch in either box. Two conductors will carry the hot and neutral and the third conductor will carry the switched load. The Inovelli drawings do not cover every possible combination.
See the extra red wire, you can use that to bring the load between the boxes for either drawing.
But, if you want both locations to be scene controllers then you an use an Aux switch and set the parameters for different aux switch scenes and disable local control. Then, your automation system can “see” each button as it’s own scene and only it can control the dimmer level.
