Blue dimmer + binding

Before I make a purchase, I wanted to do a quick sanity check.

I currently have a Red dimmer operating in smart bulb mode with some Zigbee bulbs. Obviously I can’t do binding between these. To control the dimming level, I have an automation in Home Assistant that detects when the brightness changes on the switch (I.e. when I press and hold and then let go of the switch) and then sets the bulb brightness to match. Because it doesn’t trigger until I let go of the switch, it does not adjust as I hold – it only adjusts when I have set the brightness. This is fine for me because I rarely press and hold at that particular switch.

I have another switch where I may occasionally want to press and hold and get instant feedback. If I get a Blue dimmer and bind it to Zigbee bulbs will this problem go away for me? Also, it’s in a 4-way. To make it work with smart bulbs, do I need to also get 2 aux switches? Will those have any issues with the press and hold behavior? The bulbs in question here would be Philips Hue retrofit recessed lighting.

Yes, it should dim your Zigbee bulbs from the switch provided it is bound to the bulb or group of bulbs.

As far as getting Aux switches, it depends on if you want dimming at all locations on that circuit, but otherwise it shouldn’t matter if you have dumb switches in the circuit, you will just need to make sure the Dimmer is on the Line side of the circuit and you also need to make sure you have a neutral available.

As it will be in “smart bulb” mode, the bulb will be powered on full time, and the switch will send commands to the bulb over the zigbee network, so a press and hold from the Dimmer should work without issue.
