Bulbs don't turn off — White Switch

Hi all. I’m new, and recent owner of Inovelli smart switch. I have a White series smart dimmer that operates a chandelier. Something strange is happening. The LED bulbs in the chandelier are not turning off. I tried resetting the switch. I deleted the switch from my Apple Home app. But now I can’t add it back to the app.

It was working find up until this morning. I was distracted by something when I was turning the switch on from the wall, and I don’t know if I accidentally pressed the toggle in a way that would cause this?

I change the switch back to dimmer mode, but now when I dim the lights it dims to only a certain level. And if I turn off the switch, the bulbs stay illuminated at this level. It’s like it is locked in to only dim down to this level, and even when turned off, the bulbs remain dimmed at this level. Does this make sense? Is there a way to correct this so:

Bulbs dim all the way down
Bulbs turn off when the switch is turned off
Switch is reconnected to Home app

Thank you!

The first thing to check is to make sure that the switch is actually turned off in the app. I am bringing this up because there in the past some thought that they could hold the down paddle to get the switch to turn off.

To get the switch to turn off you need a quick down press. Holding the paddle down will take the brightness down to the minimum level and stay there regardless of how long you hold it.

If you do a quick down press, any difference? That might be what you have been doing but just thought I would double check.

Also, see if there is any difference between turning the switch off at the paddle and the switch off in the app.

Is this a neutral or non-neutral installation?

Yeah, just click the down toggle button, and the lights just dim but don’t turn off anymore. I can’t seem to get it back on my Home app, so am unable to control it on the app. I try to add new accessory, and scan QR code. Then it says “Connecting…” for several minutes, but eventually gives up ( I forget what the error says)

Thank you!

After trying to connect for a few minutes, the app says: “Accessory Not Found — You may need to restart your accessory before you can add it to your home.”

I would try a factory reset and then re-add it to your hub.

I did factory reset by pressing top of paddle while pressing config button for 20 seconds. When the LED bar turned solid red, I released the buttons. Then I re-added the switch to HomeKit. But it is still not turning off the bulbs in the app or on the wall switch. Even if I have the bulbs at full brightness, when I try to turn it off, it dims the bulbs. The app says it is “off” — but the bulbs are still on, just dimmed

I had this same issue. Do you have a wire neutral at the switch box, or is there no neutral?

Yes, I have a neutral wire

The thing is that this used to work correctly at one point, right? So even if you did some weird configuration setting the factory reset should have taken care of that. I’m beginning to wonder if the switch went bad.

Yeah, it was working fine until a couple days. I did the factory reset multiple times. I removed it from Apple Home app. I re-added it to the app. I changed it from dimmer to On/Off. The problem persists. Lights still do not turn off all the way. At this point, the only way I can turn them off is by using that tab on the lower left, beneath my wall switch plate.

I’m going to try contacting the company for tech support

I’ll keep checking back here to see if anyone has any more suggestions, and I’ll post back if I gain any new insight after contacting the tech support

Is the switch in Smart Bulb mode by any chance?
Hold Paddle-Down and tap config 4X to turn off Smart Bulb mode.

No, I did not activate smart bulb mode because I just have regular LED bulbs.

I did contact the company, and am working through tech support via email correspondence. We have determined that it might be due to low wattage of the LED bulbs. I have 9 total bulbs and each bulb is 3 watts. Apparently the minimum wattage should be 25. Even though I’m at 27 watts, the tech support person thought that this might be the issue. To test it, I replaced one of the bulbs with a higher wattage incandescent bulb. Once I did that, the lights turned off correctly — but I prefer to use LED bulbs because they are more energy efficient also, I hate how the old fashioned bulbs generate so much heat.

Obviously, I’m no expert in this. But tech support told me that I can add in a dimmer bypass — which they sell. The bypass costs $15, but the price nearly doubles because shipping fees are added. So now I am trying to figure out if I have other options

If you’re a Prime member, Amazon has the Lutron LUT-MLC for under $15. Bypasses (Lutron, Aeotec, Fibraro) are all going to be about that same price anywhere (and are all pretty much equivalent in performance), so getting the best shipping price is likely the biggest differentiator in your choice.

Trying a bypass certainly can’t hurt anything, and may indeed help here.

Definitely not the SBM, as that would return after a air gap reboot.

What’s strange is that if the OP reboots with the air gap, the lights turn off completely, but then fail turn turn off completely after the first turn on. Do I have that right?

Yes. The bulbs all turn off when I use the air gap tab. After I press that tab back in, the bulbs remain off. When I press the paddle button to turn on, the bulbs turn on but then the problem returns. The bulbs no longer dim all the way down, and they dim — but do not fully turn off when the power is turned off. The only way is to cut the power using the air-gap tab again.

Replacing at least one bulb with an incandescent (25w) bulbs seems to make it work again. So currently I have 8X3W LEDs + 1 25W incandescent, so I can turn off/on and dim — but obviously it looks weird with the once incandescent bulb, and I would prefer to use all LED.

I was just dimming it, and do notice that the LED bulbs have a little bit of flickering when I change the dim — mostly on the higher and lower end of dimming. When I turn it off now, I do notice some of the LEDs flicker as they fade out. I did have flickering when dimming problems before, and that stopped after changing leading/trailing edge mode. I imagine this went away when I did the factory reset several times while trying to solve this problem. I just changed it to trailing edge mode, and that seems have helped with this flickering.

Thank you. I am Prime member. I just ordered the Lutron one as that is in stock and supposedly will arrive soonest. So I’m give that a shot first

If adding an incandescent fixes the issue, I think @hydro311 's suggestion of using a bypass is the solution. It’s hard to say why you didn’t have the issue when you first installed, but my suspicion has been that the characteristics of the bulbs change over time. You are not the first to experience this.

Hydro311 is dead on!!! This is your easiest fix and it will work!

Thanks… I purchased Lutron LUT-MLC on Amazon Prime as it was in stock, and shipped soonest. I installed it at the chandelier. Here’s the result:

The LED lights now all turn off when I turn off the lights — BUT now the lights all flash like a strobe light no matter how much I brighten or dim them. Is there a way to make them stop flashing like a strobe light?

Thanks!

What bulbs are you using?
