Fan/Light Switch Disconnection Issue Thread

  • Date switch was purchased

  • Approximate distance from switch to fan canopy
    • 20’, but it’s not quite line of sight because there’s the edge of a door frame in the way. also, I have plaster walls.
  • Approximate internal temperature (in house) and external temperature (outside)
    • internal 70-74, though it gets hotter up near the ceiling (hence the need for a fan). I’ve measured the canopy at 90 degrees on a record hot day when the fan isn’t running.
    • external 20-100. the problem has gotten worse as we’ve gone into spring/summer, but I don’t feel it is correlated to temperature.
  • What is your hub/gateway (ie: SmartThings, Hubitat, etc)?
    • SmartThings
  • What firmware version are you on (if you don’t know, leave blank, but it’s helpful)?
    • 1.34
  • Have you made any parameter changes?
    • dimming speed = 1. I think I made this change after the problems began.
  • Approximate wattage of your bulbs
    • 20W LED
  • Does the disconnection happen when using the fan, the light or both?
    • both. it seems to be all or nothing; I’ve never seen one work and the other fail. Normally it disconnects during a days-long period of inactivity. The only time I ever “witnessed” the disconnection was the very last time it ever worked: I was able to turn the fan on and couldn’t turn it back off again. I had to power-cycle the circuit to turn it off.
  • Do you notice any patterns (ie: time of day, time since last disconnection, etc)?
    • The switch worked flawlessly for months, then it became less and less reliable. When the problems first manifested, rebooting via the air gap would fix it temporarily (usually the rest of the day). Now it doesn’t work at all, and the air gap trick is no help. I also tried re-pairing with the canopy module and it fails (LEDs blink red and fan light keeps pulsing). I haven’t seen any pattern except a steady deterioration.
  • previous circuit
    • the fan previously had a different brand of wireless controller (a handheld remote). the canopy module looked almost identical to the Inovelli one. the previous controller was subject to random activations, I think because my neighbor has a similar model, which is the main reason I replaced it. I haven’t had a random activation since, but I haven’t had enough intentional ones either!
  • box
    • the switch is in a plastic 3-gang box, of which only the two end gangs are populated.

I posted slightly different info in the old thread before someone helpfully pointed me here.
