Need help with blue fan canopy module

I’ve had an annoying few days with this one. We moved into our house a year ago. There was a light/fan on our patio that the previous owners installed, and they also did some wacky stuff to bypass the old wall switches to keep the fan powered on to be controlled by a remote.

I have been annoyed for the past year about these non functional switches, so while my wife is on vacation with her mom, I finally decided to do something about it.

I opened up the switch cover and it was a nightmare of wires.

I’ve installed over 20 inovelli blue switches in the house and 2 canopy modules with no issue. But this rats nest of wires was a bit much, so I had an electrician install the switch here. I replaced the patio fan because the one that was here had a DC motor. And I installed the canopy module to the best of my ability. There is no red wire coming out of my new fan, so I followed some posts advice about wiring the red wire from the module to the black wire from the fan.

That works now and I have set up the bindings the same way I did on the other 2 canopy modules in the house (hopefully. it’s been a year since I did the other ones).

Here’s my problem:
Only the light turns on and off. The fan just remains on. I’ve been at this for the past 3 days now. Unpairing/deleting/factory resetting/etc. I’m out of ideas.

Help me be a hero when my wife gets home from vacation!

We’re going to need clear pictures of the fan wiring with all of the wires going into the ceiling, the canopy module and the fan visible to be able to help.

We’ll need pictures also showing all of the wiring at the switch as well (Make sure to pull the switch out so we can see where each of the individual conductors are going in the box).

Also if you have the fan model information, that will also be helpful.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the delayed response, I missed the notification.

I don’t think the electrician was very good. I just realized he disconnected the outlet below the switches here. So It looks like I need all the help I can get. I doodled the switch box as well, since it’s difficult to see all the wires in this mess. The electrician said that the left-most bundle of wires is for the light/fan outside.

There is a second switch for this fan/light in our master bedroom next to the other patio door. I installed an inovelli add on switch there, and it can properly control the state of the switch that the electrician installed.

Pictured are:

  • The switch in question
  • a zoomed out pic showing the switch as well as the dead outlet
  • a doodle of the wires in the box to make it easier to see what’s in there (green are the bare ground wires)
  • 2 pics of the canopy wiring

The fan:
Honeywell Ceiling Fans Palm Valley, 52 Inch Tropical Indoor Outdoor Ceiling Fan with Light, Pull Chain, Three Mounting Options, 5 Palm Leaf Blades, Reversible Motor - 50507-01 (Bronze) Amazon.com

The light and fan both work as intended with the pull chains.

I’ll do my best to describe what’s happening in the switch box, I’ll refer to the bundles by the numbers in my doodle. There are four bundles of wires coming in at the top, and one at the bottom.

The switch is connected as follows:

  • Traveler: Red from #1
  • Neutral: All 5 white wires are bundled together and attached to the switch
  • Line: black wires 1, 3, 4, and 5 are bundled together and connected to line
  • Load: nothing
  • Ground: all 5 grounds are tied together and connected to the switch

Other than that, the red wire in bundle 3 and the black wire from bundle 2 are capped off and not connected to anything. The dangling ground wire looks like it can just be removed, as well.

On the fan itself, there is a red wire coming from the ceiling that is capped off.

It’s also probably worth noting that the switch did not control the light or fan when he first installed it. I didn’t notice at first because I was up in the attic running ethernet cables while he was doing this. He just yelled up to me that it was done on his way out. I guess he just saw that the light bar lights up and thought it was a finished job.

It only controls the light now because I did a zigbee binding It doesn’t control anything otherwise. I’m unable to get the fan working from the switch.

Typing all this out makes me realize it probably needs to be rewired entirely. I’m perfectly comfortable doing that if I know exactly what goes where.

Thanks for taking a look. Let me know if you need more info!

Hey guys, I’m still at it with no luck. Could really use some tips. My wife is on the plane home from london now, so i don’t think i’ll look quite as heroic as I intended when she gets home.

Is there somewhere else I can ask for a quicker solution? I came directly to the forums because I see people online say that inovelli support is dismissive and just directs you to the forums anyway.

I did end up fixing the plug. one of the neutral wires in the bundle was loose. I checked all the other bundles for loose wires as well.

We’re just all friendly community members here :). Volunteer support happens when people have time. If you want faster support, you may need to call out an electrician (again).

If I’m understanding your problem correctly, the issue is that the fan never turns on when your hub commands the fan module to turn on? Is that correct?

Your picture of the canopy module isn’t totally clear, but I see two black wires going into the same wire nut as the red wire from the canopy module. Per the wiring instructions for your fan, there should only be one black wire coming from the fan body in there.

Based on that I think the canopy module is not wired correctly. Can you take more pictures and provide an explanation of the wires similar to what you did for the switch?

Correct, but now it appears that the canopy module unpaired itself and I’m unable to repair it.

That is the black wire from the ceiling, the black wire from the fan, the black wire from the canopy module, and the red wire from the canopy module.

Yeah that’s completely wrong. Hopefully, the module is just unpaired and didn’t get fried.

You need the black wire from the canopy module tied to the line (black wire from the ceiling).

The black wire from the fan tied to the red wire if the canopy module.

Those should not all be in one bundle.

Thanks for the reply. This made it worse. Now it doesn’t pair and i cant manually operate the fan and light from their pull chains.

I guess I’ll order a new canopy module and try it out again.

Thanks again for looking.
